There is almost no chance that the Cowboys would have selected a quarterback with their ninth overall pick.
But Andrew Luck's Thursday announcement, that he is staying at Stanford for his senior year, plays a role in how the Cowboys will draft.
Luck was believed by many to be the first overall pick in April's NFL Draft.
That means a player that was certain to be drafted before the Cowboys selected at No. 9 is off the board before the first pick is even selected.
This ultimately hurts the chances of one of the top defensive players or offensive linemen falling to the Cowboys.
Carolina, who has the top pick, could certainly take the next best quarterback. But that still means another team, who was thinking about a QB, could choose to go in another direction because Carolina took the signal caller they believed would fall to them.
Here are the teams drafting ahead of the Cowboys (including team needs):
1. Carolina (QB, DE, DT, CB)
2. Denver (DE, MLB, S, CB,)
3. Buffalo (QB, OT, DE, OLB)
4. Cincinnati (OT, DE, S, OG)
5. Arizona (QB, OT, OG, CB)
6. Cleveland (ILB, OLB, OT, WR)
7. San Francisco (DT, OLB, CB, C)
8. Tennessee (QB, ILB, CB, OG)
