The Cowboys could have eliminated the Giants. Not once, but essentially twice. If they could have held their 12-point, fourth-quarter lead on Dec. 11, the Giants would have been 6-7 and two games back of the Cowboys with three to play. Dallas had a chance to put away the Giants again in the regular-season finale in a winner-take-all game, but New York won 31-14.

Now, the Cowboys will watch their rivals in the Super Bowl against the Patriots.

The question is: How close are the Cowboys to the Giants?

Clarence E. Hill Jr., beat writer:
So close, yet so far. The games and scores say they are close but don't be deceived: The Giants have a better defense powered by a proven pass rush. More importantly, the Giants have players who have gotten it done on the biggest of stages.

Charean Williams, beat writer:
They are as far away as two Lombardi Trophies. The Giants are on the verge of winning their second in five years. The Cowboys won their last to wrap up the 1995 season. The Giants have a quarterback who knows how to win big games, and on the road. He has the most road postseason victories in history already and is 7-3 in the postseason overall. In two weeks, he could own more Super Bowl rings than his more-acclaimed older brother. The Giants also have a better receiving corps, a better coach, a better offensive line and a better front seven than the Cowboys. As close as they came to eliminating the Giants this season, the Cowboys have a long way to go to catch up.

Carlos Mendez, beat writer:
Isn't this Jerry Jones' question? It's probably been driving him crazy. But he, and the rest of us, must resist the temptation to fool ourselves. The Giants are in the Super Bowl, because they have a bona fide defense that is capable of pressuring the quarterback with four players. They can run the ball. Their receivers are beasts -- all of them. And their quarterback plays at an elite level when the games matter most. I still think about Eli Manning's performance at Cowboys Stadium on Dec. 11. Laser sharp. The Cowboys played the Giants close, because they are close at quarterback. But they are not close in the front seven, at receiver, at running back or in the offensive line. Even the no-pedigree tight ends of the Giants outperformed the Cowboys' in both games. Maybe when DeMarco Murray comes back. Maybe when Miles Austin is healthy for 16 games. Maybe if the Cowboys draft a top-flight corner. Maybe if the offensive line is better. Maybe the Cowboys are close. Maybe -- no, probably -- it is an illusion.

David Humphrey, editor:Dallas is close to the Giants in terms of talent. It's their play in December/January where the separation begins and ends. As soon as Dallas learns how to close a season, they'll be a major contender again

charean williams nailed it.

THey are just simply better everywhere.

and its all because of one thing. Structure and the organizational approach.

they have been riding the same train since 04. Ups and downs like everyone else but the philosophy remains and it is that philosophy which comes from the head coach by the way that has helped them achieve all this.

compare that to the approach we took when we hired wade phillips and really there are no more questions.

it ends right there.

and just to make it more fun we have the same people making the decisions who put us into this problem today and are now asked to correct their own mistakes.

so basically we are screwed until the jones family gives in and turns it over to people who are qualified to run the show again. But at least we have ware and romo. Romo will keep us in games we probably shouldnt be in and take as far as he can without the help of a competent coaching staff and organization.

unfortunately the fan base is so dumb they mostly complain about romo and many complain about ware.

I kinda agree with what David Humprhey said at the end... The Giants know how to pick up steam at just the right time.

And that more than likely comes from the coach.

As far as the players are concerned, I think we're an OLine away from being a lot like the NE Patriots of this year instead of the Giants. We need too much on defense to be compared to them.

Were it not for Romo having a meltdown against the Lions and Garrett coaching like a pussy in both the Patriots and Cards game---he ices his own kicker, or if Murray doesn't get hurt in the first Giants' game... then this thread would not exist. So I don't buy that shit.

Wow the irony.

The giants have better coaching rb's, wr's, line, front 7, and safeties. And yet we came one shithead timeout from winning the division.

Thank you romo.

Better RB and Oline? Is that why they had the #31 ranked rushing offense for most of the year? That is until they faced us. Then they shot up a bit.

Their ol is smarter and protects their QB better when it matters. Our line always falls apart late in the season. I font know if it's poor coaching, poor physical preparation or what. But it's clockwork

It's easy to protect the QB when you are able to hold and get away with it.

It's not just the line. The whole organization falls apart.

This organization needs a head guy, an authority figure to take control of everything and be the asshole everyone has to deal with.

There is nothing like that hear and every year we see the same finishes.

Everything here is pretty much poor except for a handful of players, this is the perfect year to go full on rebuild and at least try and create a new environment and core group.

But again that gets us back to the main problem, the front office sucks and the coaching staff is a notch above poor.

Its going to be a down couple of years I think while we watch romo and wares careers ride off into the sunset, and they will take the blame to.

These last two years show without question everything needs to be changed. Front office down.

Nt happening though, we are going to get Abe Elam and scandrick as starters and a bunch of crap about the offseason ota's and how important they are.

Or the block in the back whenh one of the 49er defenders was about to sack Eli.

If you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'. The trouble is, I think refs are only human and look at the Cowboys with more of a critical eye than other teams (except maybe the Raiders) and so we rarely get away with that blatant stuff.

Process, chronic problem..

Same difference.

Either way the stadjum is open for tours. Cha Ching.

You're more than welcome to root for the Giants if you like them so much and hate us so much.

I used to look forward to reading your posts, theebs. Now it's just constant negativity. I still respect you though.
