Title Wave
Houck, John Garrett Explain New Roles
Josh Ellis
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer
Houck has been an offensive line coach for all of his 28 pro seasons.
IRVING, Texas - In taking on the added responsibilities of head coach, Jason Garrett's schedule changes, and he can't be everywhere at one time.
Garrett will still call the plays, and retains the title of offensive coordinator. But now that he's in charge of the entire team, Garrett has expanded his sphere of influence to the defense and special teams, and has taken to sitting in on every position meeting for a certain period of time each day. In turn, his staff has had to pick up some of the slack.
Officially, the Cowboys have named a passing game coordinator and a running game coordinator to handle the balance of Garrett's former duties. Hudson Houck, the 28-year veteran of NFL offensive line coaching, is the running game coordinator, while John Garrett, the head coach's brother, will orchestrate the passing game behind the scenes.
"Jason says, 'No, we can't do that; we can't do this; we can do that,'" Houck said. "He looks at the overall picture and sees how it all fits together - pass, run, down and distance, and so forth. So it really all kind of fits together."
For the most part, John Garrett said, things have been done this way since midseason, when Jason was promoted. Much of the increased responsibility takes affect during the preparation for a game.
"That usually occurs a lot during the week," John Garrett said. "So during the week, I, as everyone on the staff, will have increased responsibilities in organization, in planning, in all those jobs he used to do during the week, just alleviating it off of his plate, so to speak, to allow him to do his other jobs.
"It's real close to a continuation."
