The Cowboys may not be done with free agent linebacker Anthony Spencer just yet.

According to a team source, Spencer is a candidate for the franchise tag, giving him a one-year deal of about $8.8 million.

Never mind that he has largely been a disappointment since joining the Cowboys as a first round pick in 2007.

Never mind that has never had more than six sacks in the season and has yet to provide a consistent force opposite all-pro DeMarcus Ware.

He is solid against against the run as he was fourth on the Cowboys with 74 tackles in 2011. He also led in forced fumbles with four and tied for the team lead in tackles for losses with eight.

And getting back to the pass rush, Spencer did have 31 quarterback pressures, second behind Ware's 40. What doesn't translate is the six sacks to 19.5 for Ware.

That number needs in improvement. The Cowboys know as much.

But the bottom line with a potential franchise decision on Spencer is finding a potential replacement for him.

There are few options on the free-agent market, unless you consider Houston's Mario Williams. He is likely the top free agent the market and will command a hefty price. He would be a huge financial risk for Cowboys considering his limited experience in the 3-4 especially at strongside outside linebacker which is Spencer's spot.

Another option is Indianapolis defensive end Robert Mathis, who could potentially make the move to outside linebacker in a 3-4. But again he has never played the position and he is 31 years old compared to Spencer who just turned 28.

And if the Cowboys don't find a replacement in free agency and don't sign Spencer, they box themselves into the possibly making a bad decision in the draft by forcing them to pick for need.

The Cowboys have made no final decisions. But franchising Spencer is being discussed.

looks stupid On surface but it makes sense... Don't leave yourself suceptible to having to draft an OLB in round one or two. Tag this loser..keep him around as a stop gap until you find his replacement. This will then allow us to draft the BPA, hopefully, a guy like Decastro or Kirkpatrick or Brockers.. As opposed to having to reach for a guy like a Melvin Ingram for example.

Makes sense to me

Why not just do that big signing bonus /small base shut Adam and I always talk about? Or incentive laden 1 year deal.

You have this chip as leverage in your favor

There are so many OLB types to choose from in the draft this year:

Whitney Mercilus
Andre Branch
Nick Perry
Chandler Jones
Melvin Ingram
Courtney Upshaw
Vinny Curry
Jonathan Massaquoi

and under the radar guys like Jake Bequette, Jack Crawford, Brandon Lindsey and Jacquies Smith.

It's loaded, and yet the Cowboys want to throw 10 mil at Anthony Spencer lol

I don't think loaded is the right word... None of these guys scream elite pass rusher...now spencer sucks, and finding someone to produce what he's producing at a much lesser cost is highly possible.. But maybe the front office doesn't want another spencer

Whitney Mercilus - Puke.
Andre Branch - Laz likes so him so now he's suspect.
Nick Perry - Went to a great college.
Chandler Jones - Sleeper.
Melvin Ingram - Midget arms scare me but good player.
Courtney Upshaw - Like him but not pick #14 like him.
Vinny Curry - Not sure if he can stand up, back peddle, and cover anyone.
Jonathan Massaquoi - 4th round yes, before that no.

No Bruce Irvin?

Exactly.

Commit big money for meh, or get 2 new guys on rookie deals w/ fresh legs and room for improvement.

I'd pay Greg Ellis 5 mil for one year before I paid Anthony Spencer 8-9 mil.

Just read Baltimore led the league w/ 21 forced fumbles. I knew it wasn't just my hunch, they're clearly more hungry than our D. We never stand guys up and go at the ball. Shit that swings games.

Spend that money on a playmaker, a difference maker.

Instead of being scared how you fill his 6 sacks be scared pf what the same ol same ol will get you

Seriously, what is the difference between getting rid of him now and getting rid of him next year.

Does anyone really think this team should give him a long term deal? The only way anyone can say he should get one is if he plays really well this coming up season and even then, who's comfortable giving a 5 year veteran a long term deal when he finally showed up in a franchise tag year?

Do people really think this team the difference between what Spencer does and what a FA player could do is the difference between winning the Superbowl or not?

Call me crazy, but I'd rather let Spencer go if he will eat 9M in cap space, sign or draft an adequate player and use the remaining money to sure up other parts of the team. If Dallas drafted a LB in the 2nd, they'd commit less than 1M in cap space to that player.

What could the other 8M get you? Best CB on the market? Nicks?
