The Dallas Cowboys are coming home from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis with a better outlook on the top draft prospects and a game plan on how they want to proceed in free agency.
One decision has been made. The Cowboys will target a veteran cornerback in free agency to potentially replace Terence Newman, a likely salary-cap casualty because of his age, declining play and injury history.
According to sources, the Cowboys will open free agency March 13 with two top corner options, Kansas City's Brandon Carr and Tennessee's Cortland Finnegan.
They are the best two cornerbacks on the market, and at ages 25 and 28, respectively, either could give the Cowboys security at the position for years to come.
Vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys have not closed the door on Newman, but he acknowledges the team will look for veteran options in free agency.

RG3 to Redskins?
The St. Louis Rams are willing to trade the second overall pick in the April draft, and the Washington Redskins are willing to accept the offer.
Chief operating officer Kevin Demoff said Tuesday that the Rams would make a deal under the right circumstances but have not made any commitments despite a report late Monday that a trade had already been decided.
On Tuesday, The Washington Post reported that the Redskins are willing to give up two first-round picks and various selections in the early and middle rounds to move up to No. 2 and select Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, who won the Heisman Trophy last season in leading the Bears to their first 10-win season.
Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is expected to be taken first overall by the Indianapolis Colts.
The Rams are said to be seeking compensation similar to what the San Diego Chargers received from the New York Giants in exchange for Eli Manning in 2004. That year, the Chargers drafted Manning first overall. The Giants sent their fourth overall pick, the following year's first-round pick and their 2004 third- and fifth-round picks to San Diego for Manning.
Briefly
Scheduling: An NFL game will be played on a Wednesday for the first time since 1948 when the season opens Sept. 5. The game, in which the Giants will host an opponent to be determined, was scheduled to avoid conflicting with President Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention on Sept. 6.
Lawsuit: Former DL Michael Myers, who played for the Cowboys from 1998-2003, is suing the NFL, alleging concussions suffered while playing have caused him memory loss, migraine headaches and other health problems.
49ers: LB Ahmad Brooks signed a six-year, $44.5 million contract extension.
Jets: WR Plaxico Burress, set to become a free agent March 13, said in a radio interview that he wants to play for the Eagles.
