Report: Vikings tell Bill Parcells to name his price, want him to run show

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Blogger

Would Bill Parcells really be interested in coaching in Minnesota.

While the Saints (or, more specifically, Sean Payton) pine for Bill Parcells when Payton's suspension for the bounty program begins, it sounds like another team also is interested in acquiring the Hall of Fame finalist.

According to the New York Post, that team is the Vikings.

Apparently, Minnesota owner Zygi Wilf is putting the “hard sell” on Parcells, and Wilf and general manager Rick Spielman want Parcells to come to Minnesota and “run the show.”

Though Wilf apparently told Parcells to name his price, the Post writes that Parcells has reservations about the job.

In truth, this would be a strange move by the Vikings. Yes, Minnesota was terrible last year, going 3-13, and already there have been questions about whether coach Leslie Frazier is a good fit as the head coach in the organization (remember, though, he took over a tough situation for Brad Childress and righted the team by going 3-3 in the final six games, and it seems to me that he's earned more than 22 games to prove he's worthy of the job).

But Parcells is 70 years old, and he's stated in the past that he's not sure he wants to coach again. What kind of commitment could he give the Vikings, particularly since he bailed as a Dolphins executive in the middle of the 2010 season and particularly since he's been so wish-washy over the years about retirement plans and whether he wants to return to the sideline? It's not like Parcells is going to coach another five years.

Parcells also apparently is worried about whether the game has passed him by, and if true, that question of confidence is striking for one of the game's most successful head coaches.

Besides, why would he choose Minnesota over New Orleans assuming he can get hired to take over for Payton on a temporary basis? After all, Payton is a friend and Parcells might want to coach only one season and be done with it for good.

"I know people are thinking, 'There's a deal already done,'” Parcells said recently. "But really, he's my friend. That's the first thing this is about. I feel an obligation, a responsibility to help him. … If this guy says to me, 'Bill, I need you to do this,' that's what friends are supposed to be for."

And unless Wilf all of a sudden has become BFFs with Parcells, it seems unlikely Parcells will make his triumphant return to coaching in Minnesota.

The man will be 71 by the time the season starts, he should just stay retired. A job like this kind will kill the guy. Being in charge of everything can't be good for a 71 year old man.

Having said that I have no doubt he would win more than frazier did.

But no way he gets in that division with no qb at this point in his life.....and umm who hires a coach de facto gm in the middle of april? That is crazy, good Luck in the future hiring.

when you're the GOAT everybody wants you

Agreed. If Belichick was available, 31 other teams would fire their coaches and try to lure him.

But.... what doees any of this have to do with the Vikings having an interest in an outdated relic like Parcells?

Yeah, Parcells improves teams. But One, he doesn't stick around long, and the team usually isn't left in a position to succeed long after his departure, and B, he hasn't won a Super Bowl in over 20 years.

Not sure what this means.
