If the draft were held today, we'd have the 19th overall selection.
Everyone knows I want Warmack or Cooper in the first, but do I really think we go that route? Honestly, probably not. So I'll go in another direction this time around.
1. Jonathan Jenkins, NT, Georgia
On Twitter during or immediately after last years draft, I asked a number of people associated with the Cowboys, or Cowboys beat guys last year why we didn't take either Josh Chapman or that fat NT that the Steelers drafted (Ta'amu?) when the "value" was right, and a couple responded that the Cowboys didn't place an emphasis on big bodied nose tackles, prefering speed over space eaters.
If that is true, then perhaps this guy doesn't get a sniff from the team. But considering the recent fall out between Ratliff and idiot Jerry, coupled with him wearing down, I'm doubting he's with the team next year. Also doubtful that Josh Brent is with the team. Defensive line, with an emphasis on Nose Tackle, is a glaring need.
In Jenkins, we have a 6'3", 355lb who is phenomenal against the run. He also had 15 QB pressures as well, although I'm not sure he's that great as a pass rusher, or if his size/strength just overwhelmed college guards. On top of that, he's a character guy. He could've gone pro last year, but elected to return to school to try and win a National Championship with his team.
2. D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
I'm not buying that Jeremy Parnell is a long term answer at OT. He seems like a career swing tackle at best. And I'm also not believing that Doug Free returns next year, regardless of how much Jason Garrett talks about his improved play or idiot Jerry tells us he hasn't lost faith in him. In drafting Fluker, we get a road grader RT who dominates in the run game. And lets face it, we desperately need some push in the run game from our Oline.
I wanted to mock an interior Olineman here. I even toyed with the idea that maybe Barrett Jones could be available when we draft with our lower 40's selection. But when I looked at recent draft history, I noticed that 4 interior Olineman were taken in the top 50 in 2012, and 5 were taken in the top 50 in 2011. Surely Barrett, who also could project as a LT in the NFL, will be gone by then. So I went with the next best Olineman who I also think fills a drastic need for us. Worst case scenario, if Fluker struggles on the outside in the NFL, he also has the size/speed to project to the inside of the line.
I'm also of the depressing belief that idiot Jerry will think that an off season of NFL training/conditioning is all Ronald Leary (and his 200k signing bonus) needed to be ready to contribute in 2013. Oh, and surely David Arkin will be ready, right? ~Wink nod smile~
3. Montee Ball, RB, Wisconsin
I don't think you can underestimate how big a need RB is for us during this off season. And I think we'd be lucky to land a guy like Ball in the third. He has good vision, quickness, size and strength. I would have no problem starting him during Murray's annual 6 game hiatus for whatever injury he will suffer.
I only did three rounds, because, quite frankly, it's at this point in the draft where the Cowboys start taking players that none of us ever expected and some of us have never heard of.
