The Dallas Cowboys are already battling the odds this season trying to become the first team to play in a Super Bowl in its home stadium. No team has done so.
Perhaps quarterback Tony Romo could improve the team's chances with a slight number change - from the No. 9 he currently wears to No. 12, the number worn by Dallas Hall of Famer Roger Staubach.
How would this improve the team's chances?
Quarterbacks who wore the No. 12 have won 13 Super Bowls, more than any other number.
Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw won four Super Bowls - in one decade. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has three Super Bowl wins. Staubach won two, as did former Miami Dolphins quarterback Bob Griese . Ken Stabler won one with the Oakland Raiders . And Joe Namath guaranteed and then delivered a Super Bowl III win over Baltimore.
And quarterbacks wearing No. 12 have appeared in many other Super Bowls. Staubach, Brady and Griese quarterbacked losing teams in the Super Bowl. Ex-Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, another No. 12, was winless in four straight Super Bowl appearances.
If Romo doesn't want to wear No. 12, perhaps he might consider No. 16. Quarterbacks wearing 16 have won seven of the nine Super Bowls they have played in, led by Joe Montana's four Super Bowl wins.
Or maybe Romo could drop down to No. 8, a quarterback number which produced five Super Bowl wins, including three by ex-Cowboy Troy Aikman.
But don't worry. Romo's jersey number, No. 9, has been worn by two Super Bowl QBs, including New Orleans' Drew Brees, the current Super Bowl champion QB.
And Romo's not wearing No. 6, which is a good thing. Pity Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. No quarterback wearing No. 6 has ever taken a team to the Super Bowl.
