Here's how the Cowbooys will 'attack' penalties

10:39 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 14, 2010

When the Cowboys return to practice today, they will "attack" penalties," Phillips said.

The Cowboys were called for 15 penalties against Washington, with 12 accepted for 91 yards.

To attack penalties, Phillips said, there will be increased focus during practice on proper techniques with hands and feet. Breakdowns in those areas contributed to eight penalties that came after the snap.

Six enforced penalties against the offense contributed to an inordinate number of third-and-long situations. The Cowboys needed eight-plus yards on nine of the 13 third-down plays. The Cowboys converted on only two of those plays.

Briefly: Free safety Alan Ball had a forced fumble in the opener. That gives him one more forced fumble than Ken Hamlin had in 12 starts at the position last season. Ball's play came when he knocked the ball from tight end Chris Cooley in the third quarter. Washington retained possession because the ball went out of bounds at the Cowboys 40. ... Tight end Jason Witten, asked to block more as the offensive line goes through injury-caused changes, had only three catches for 27 yards in the opener. It was his lowest production since a one-catch, 11-yard game against San Francisco on Nov. 23, 2008. ... The Cowboys kept tight end Scott Chandler on the practice roster. There had been concern within the organization that the New York Giants, strapped for help at the position, would try to bring back Chandler, who went to camp with them. The Giants instead added tight end Bear Pascoe from their practice squad.

I have to say that the safeties seem to be in good position for the most part and didn't give up too many big plays. That was nice to see.

Also nice to see was Jenkins actually on the WR on a 3 and 6 a few times, instead of the 5-10 yards away from them when they only need 5 or 6 for a first.

The penalties are focus. Mental mistakes has killed this team. Players need to step and keep on each other about that shit.

I agree with SBK and some others who have either inferred or come right out and said that this is a team that has more than its share of dunderheads... especially along with offensive line. And unless you replace them, the mess isn't going to get much better.

It'll take at least a couple of years to fix this offensive line.

Yep, it is gonna take a while. Hopefully, they can draft a RT to start grooming. A Center would be huge, but, not a rook. Unless, he can come in and help in his 2nd year. Holland can hold down until a LG comes in. LT with Free? Hopefully, he excels and they can buy some time with finding possibly the hardest lineman to get that works.

I disagree. We should draft a Center, whether he can come in and help right away or even in his second year.

How about drafting a center than can play RG and moving Davis to RT?

That wouldn't be so bad. I'm certain that Davisd would have done better than Barron. Maybe draft a Center and put Brewster in at RG. I think he's more suited for guard anyway. And eventually kick Gurode over to LG.

LaCharles Bently and Maurkice Pouncey were thrown in.

So was Step.

Depending on how Costa/Young/Brewster develops will influence what or who they draft come April.

I would have to think that offensive line will be a prime target come next April... Along with picking up a player on that part of the team SBK has a strong aversion too. :D

They cannot neglect the Oline in this upcoming draft under any circumstances in any of thye first three rounds. Offensively, We have no need for an RB, WR, or TE. I would not be averse to having a QB, I'm not sold on McGee. Defensively, like on the Oline... they need to mend some fences with Spears and re-sign him. Hatcher or Bowens... we should be able to keep one of them. No need for an LB. I was thinking maybe draft an CB for Newman's replacement, but I see no reason as to why AOA not get a shot at it, and then in that case draft a safety.

When were Clay Shiver and Al Johnson thrown in?. And Jacob Taylor performed so well at either tackle position. Dallas has just missed on the linemen they have drafted in the past.

But, you are correct Laz. Dallas must not neglect Oline help in the next draft.
