Now the premature meltdown crowd can move on to something else.

Jason Garrett's draft pick philosophy
October, 19, 2011
By Todd Archer

IRVING, Texas -- Wide receiver Dwayne Harris cleared waivers and will return to the Cowboys’ practice squad. The biggest sign of his return was the fact that his locker remained intact.

With injuries along the offensive line the Cowboys decided to cut Harris, their sixth round pick in April to make room for guard Daniel Loper. The Cowboys have cut three draft picks with Harris and fullback Shaun Chapas (seventh) returning to the practice squad. Cornerback Josh Thomas was claimed by Carolina after he was released.

From 2009-11, the Cowboys have drafted 26 players and only 10 are currently on the active roster: Stephen McGee, Victor Butler, David Buehler, John Phillips, Dez Bryant, Sean Lee, Sean Lissemore, Tyron Smith, DeMarco Murray and David Arkin.

Bruce Carter, the team’s second round pick this year, is expected to be added to the 53-man roster soon and seventh rounder Bill Nagy was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday with an ankle injury.

The Cowboys have eight undrafted free agents from 2009-11 on the 53-man roster.

“I think it’s important that you try to make the right decisions for your football team on draft day and then once draft day is over,” Garrett said. “I think one of the worst mistakes an organization can make is say, ‘We drafted these guys, we’re keeping these guys,’ so you can say publicly, ‘Look, we have eight draft picks on our team.’ I think that’s a bad decision. So we try to create competitive environment and we’ve been very happy with our draft picks so far and the role they’re going t have now and in the future.”

Another team could still sign him later on.

Nobody will I imagine every team has a project wr on there practice squad which is probably why he was released. Robinson and ogle tree are guys who will play, Holley is a special teamer.

Harris just isn't ready tom play, just like arkin.

If a player is on a team's practice squad that team should get first right to sign him if another team is trying to.

Im pretty sure that is how it works, is it not? Isn't that why you see guys called up because they knew other teams were interested or trying to get them?

Right and if it weren't for Robinson I don't think they make that move. He's been playing well. Harris could still be a good option for us if Ogletree or Robinson doesn't stay healthy.

Just not this year, he needs a full off season OTA's, Mini camps and TC.

I don't know but that's the way it should be.
Pretty sure a team claiming a guy off our practice squad would have to put that player on the 53 man roster. They can't just pull someone from a team's PS and put them on their own PS.

That wasn't quite the question though. The question is if a team wants to claim a player off of our practice squad, do we first have a chance to add him to our 53 before the other team can get him? I had thought that was how it works, but im not 100 percent sure.

I don't think so. A guy has to clear waivers to be put on a practice squad. Once a player clears waivers, he's available for anyone to pick up as long as he's put on the 53 man. We have no control over him, aside from that.

So even if he's put back on our practice squad.. we don't have the option of calling him up to the 53 if another team tries to put a claim on him? That doesn't seem right.. althought it very well could be.

When a player is cut, he has to be put on waivers. While on waivers, another team can claim him but has to place him on the 53. If the player clears waivers, he is free to sign with anybody whether it is for the 53 or the PS. If a player is on a teams PS, another team can sign him at any time, but must put them on the 53. The team he is presently on has the option of putting him on their own 53, or letting him go to the other teams 53.

So his current team has the first chance to sign him if another team wants him.

Not sign him.. just promote him to the 53 to keep him. Also, another poster mentioned that the player claimed can also refuse to sign with the new team and just stay on his current teams PS. Doesn't happen often obviously, but interesting to note that is an option too.
