I read an article not long ago (wish I could find it again) about the 1979 draft which featured an interview with Gil.He was smooth. Hard to believe our front office wasnt locked up for decades after the raping we put on Seattle to get him.
Special shout out to Tampa, who took Ricky Bell instead of Dorsett at 1, and allowed us to swoop in.
Unfortunately, after the Dorsett swindle the shine wore off the front office Star for a decade, Gil Brandt completely went off the reservation after 1977.
From 1978 until 1987, that's basically every yr of Gil Brandt.I read an article not long ago (wish I could find it again) about the 1979 draft which featured an interview with Gil.
In it he states that Joe Montana was the highest rated player on their board when they were on the clock in the 3rd round. They decided not to take him because they didn't think he would beat out Glenn Carano as the 3rd QB, and took TE Doug Cosbie instead. The rest, as they say, is history.
Ironically his last draft in '88 was his best for over a decade. Irvin, Norton Jr and Hennings was a excellent return. From 1978 until 1987, that's basically every yr of Gil Brandt.
He was ahead of his time and was definitely a reason we built a dynasty, but he also was the #1 reason it fell apart. His drafting from 78-87 makes Jerry look almost genius-like.
