There has been talk in the past that Darren Woodson should receive consideration for the Hall, but he obviously didn’t even make it this far. That’s probably fair, but only because neither Steve Atwater nor LeRoy Butler are in there. Those two were on the All-Decade Team for the 1990s, but safeties just don’t get as much consideration for the Hall because they can’t match corners in terms of interception totals. Still, Woodson’s five Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections should count for a nod in the Ring of Honor if nothing else.
Larry Allen is probably the next Cowboy to make it in, but he won’t be eligible until the class of 2013.
As for the seniors, the two candidates are former Washington linebacker Chris Hanburger and former Ram linebacker Les Richter. Hanburger was named All-Pro four times, while Richter was named All-Pro once. Who’s missing? That would be Chuck Howley with his six Pro Bowls, five All-Pro selections, and Super Bowl MVP.
But if you really want to get mad about the Cowboys getting the shaft, consider once again the 1970s All-Decade Team. Of the 22 offensive and defensive players who were named to the first-team list, 20 are in the Hall of Fame. The two not on there are safety Cliff Harris and receiver Drew Pearson.
