Another difference-making piece for the Dallas Cowboys’ defense is out for the foreseeable future.

Rookie defensive end Randy Gregory could miss four-to-six weeks after leaving Sunday’s game with what the team believes is a high-ankle sprain. Gregory is expected to undergo an MRI on Monday to confirm the initial diagnosis.

It certainly didn’t look good afterward with Gregory wearing a walking boot on his right foot in the locker room.

“I’m optimistic, but it sucks,” Gregory said. “It’ll heal up. I’ll definitely be in the training room a lot, but I’ll be good to go after a couple weeks hopefully.”

Gregory compared the feeling to when he fractured his fibula as a sophomore in junior college.

Gregory had been having a solid NFL debut with one quarterback pressure, and showed signs of being as good as advertised. But he got tangled up with Giants rookie left tackle Ereck Flowers in the second half, and rolled his ankle awkwardly.

“I tried to brace my weight so I wouldn’t get pancaked, but my feet didn’t get all the way on the ground and just caught me at a weird angle,” Gregory said.

Gregory is the latest blow to the Cowboys’ defense. Cornerback Orlando Scandrick was lost for the season to a knee injury in training camp, and linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive end Greg Hardy are serving four-game suspensions to start the season.

He's young and hungry. As long as it's not his knee or some tear (Achilles) which we all feared, I consider ourselves lucky.

Definitely thought it was an Achilles. We dodged a bullet here. Happy for the kid.

With Gregory being our one shining spot for our pass rush till Hardy gets back this is a huge loss to injury for us
Now we are back to the same anemic pass rush we had last year that let a gimpy Rodgers run around with little to NO pressure. I still can't believe we let a one legged QB run free and beat us because we couldn't even get to him
