Gosselin: 'The world is not collapsing with a loss - not is every winner Super Bowl-bound'

Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin chatted with fans and answered questions on Thursday about the Dallas Cowboys as they prepare for their match against the Chicago Bears. Here are some highlights:

How important is Week 1 in the NFL?

It's just one of 16. But I had a note in the paper the other day that only seven of the 44 Super Bowl champions lost on opening day and went on to win the Super Bowl. That said, there's an over-reaction to opening day in every sport. Too much emphasis is placed on every win and every loss. The world is not collapsing with a loss -- nor is every winner Super Bowl-bound. I thought there were a few telling victories last weekend, most notably Houston's, and a few telling losses, most notably the Jets.

Jason Garrett is criticized for the first-half blunder by the Cowboys that led to the Redskins' TD, but isn't Tony Romo partly to blame, too?

Coaching has more to do than implementing a game plan. It's educating the players on making good decisions. When his primary reads were covered and Romo had to dump the ball off, the half was effectively over for the Cowboys even before the Choice fumble. The play should not have been called by Garrett, Romo should not have thrown the ball, Choice should not have fought for an extra meaningless yard and fumbled. There's plenty of blame to go around. Bad decisions were made by three men across the board.

Is there such a thing as a good kicker in free agency this time of year? They have enough tryouts to where there's no way a good one is not already on a roster.

Bring in Matt Stover for the make-able field goals and have David Buehler continue to kick off. Stover is from Dallas and is the NFL's fourth all-time scorer. He used to sell programs when he was a kid at Texas Stadium. Stover has played 19 NFL seasons but there's still some life in his leg. He kicked for the AFC champion Colts last season after Adam Vinatieri went down and converted 9 of 11 field goals.

Losing in week one sucks because, as a fan, you spend 8 months waiting for this game. A loss hurts there.

Especially to the Skins, and especially after beating them in most statistical categories... Except the one that counted.

He missed a wide open Jason Witten in the end zone, and overthrew Roy on the last drive in the end zone, before the holding call.

He's talking about on that particular play, idiot.

I know that asshole, so what? I was talking about other plays that Romo missed on. He hits on those, and nobodty is talking about any of this.

So your response to the question he asked had nothing to do with what he was asking.

And I'm supposed to sit here and pretend you're not a moron.

It only stings if you thought the team was going to win big this year.

If you have a clue and see the offensive line for what it is, it's disappointing but expected.

That's probably why I was the only one in the pickem to have the Redskins.

Even with Holland and Barron I don't see this being the worst offensive line in the NFL... It's not good, but it's not in the bottom five either IMO.

They hung almost 400 yards of offensive on a very good Skin's defense.

There was certainly an element of "fluke" in the Redskin's victory.

It was a definite fluke. The Redskins are an inferior team. But that doesn't change the fact this offensive line is bad and will be the reason we don't win a title. Like it was last year.

We're not gonna run through the postseason beating quality teams with this line. It just isn't happening.

I don't know if it's bottom 5 in the league, but it's right there if it isn't. I'd make it priority #1 to completely change the personnel there.

Keep in mind the offensive line that was trotted out in DC isn't the line that will be out there the bulk of the season.

Secondly outside of the line in New Orleans, there isn't any O-line anywhere that's A#1 dominant...

Philly has some major issues now.
NYG has some issues.
Green Bay's tackles look horrible.
Minnesota has tackle issues.
The Patriots line is missing a key component.
The Steelers have huge problems.
The Colts have a very poor LT.

I'm not seeing many lines out there that are head & shoulders above the line in Dallas.

If anyone other than NO, wins the next SB, it will be because they overcame their problems on the oline, not because their oline was reminiscent of the '92 Cowboys.
