Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin chatted with fans and answered questions on Thursday about the Dallas Cowboys as they prepare for their match against the Chicago Bears. Here are some highlights:
How important is Week 1 in the NFL?
It's just one of 16. But I had a note in the paper the other day that only seven of the 44 Super Bowl champions lost on opening day and went on to win the Super Bowl. That said, there's an over-reaction to opening day in every sport. Too much emphasis is placed on every win and every loss. The world is not collapsing with a loss -- nor is every winner Super Bowl-bound. I thought there were a few telling victories last weekend, most notably Houston's, and a few telling losses, most notably the Jets.
Jason Garrett is criticized for the first-half blunder by the Cowboys that led to the Redskins' TD, but isn't Tony Romo partly to blame, too?
Coaching has more to do than implementing a game plan. It's educating the players on making good decisions. When his primary reads were covered and Romo had to dump the ball off, the half was effectively over for the Cowboys even before the Choice fumble. The play should not have been called by Garrett, Romo should not have thrown the ball, Choice should not have fought for an extra meaningless yard and fumbled. There's plenty of blame to go around. Bad decisions were made by three men across the board.
Is there such a thing as a good kicker in free agency this time of year? They have enough tryouts to where there's no way a good one is not already on a roster.
Bring in Matt Stover for the make-able field goals and have David Buehler continue to kick off. Stover is from Dallas and is the NFL's fourth all-time scorer. He used to sell programs when he was a kid at Texas Stadium. Stover has played 19 NFL seasons but there's still some life in his leg. He kicked for the AFC champion Colts last season after Adam Vinatieri went down and converted 9 of 11 field goals.
