Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin chatted with fans and answered questions about the Cowboys on Thursday and discussed the team’s first game as well as the rest of the season. Here are some highlights:
The Cowboys were the hot pick at the preseason to make it to the Super Bowl, and that has waned. Did the preseason show flaws in them or good signs for other teams?
The glaring flaw was the running game. The Cowboys couldn't block and couldn’t run. But I still go back to last December when the Cowboys went into New Orleans to play a 13-0 Saints team and drilled the soon-to-be Super Bowl champions. The Cowboys were up 24-3 in the fourth quarter. That told me the Cowboys can play with -- and beat -- the best teams in the NFL. If you believe defense wins championships, you can feel even better about the Cowboys. They have a stout starting 11 plus an excellent pass rush. Dez Bryant will help open up a passing game that already has two elite weapons in Miles Austin and Jason Witten . The better Tony Romo throws the ball, the bigger the holes will become for the running game. The Cowboys are one of the five best teams in football. Don't get too invested in anything you saw from any team in the pre-season.
Do you think that Felix Jones will get the majority of snaps on Sunday night?
I think the more Jones touches the ball, the less effective he will be. I'd limit him to 12-14 carries a game and hold my breath he doesn't get hurt. When it's all said and done, I think the Cowboys will need all three of their running backs. I think you'll see Jones, Barber and Choice all have their moments this season.
Given the history of rookie wide receivers in the NFL, what are some realistic goals for Dez Bryant this season?
I'd be happy with 65 catches for 800 yards. The best rookie receiver last season caught 60 balls for 676 yards. I think Bryant can have a bigger impact on special teams than on offense. I can see him winning two games with punt returns this season. Rookies tend to struggle on offense at wide receiver. But rookies can have a quick and devastating impact on special teams. Look at what Devin Hester did in his first season with the Bears. Bryant is an elite return specialist.
