The Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin was interviewed on KTCK-FM to discuss the Dallas Cowboys and the issues involved with hiring a new coach. Here are some highlights:

Why is the Cowboys' offensive line struggling so badly?

Everybody in the league is playing young lineman. The Cowboys, I guess, don't trust their drafting. They would rather play linemen other teams have developed: Leonard Davis, Marc Colombo, Kyle Kosier , Montrae Holland ...then their own. They didn't put Doug Free in the field until they absolutely had to this year and they were scared to death. He waited four years and he's probably their best lineman. They cut [Robert] Brewster. They cut [Pat] McQuistan; he's starting for the Dolphins. They cut Stephen Peterman; he's starting for Detroit. They don't develop young linemen, so they end up with an old line and as the season wears on, it plays like an old line. I'm just surprised how early the blocking up front has fallen apart on them. I thought this may happen later in the year but certainly not in September and October.

Is there any chance Jerry Jones decides to change the structure and culture of his franchise?

No. I think there will probably be a new coach in here. They thought this was a Super Bowl team. I think the next hire has got to be a credibility hire. It's got to be like bringing in a Parcells. He's going to have to go out and get a Cowher, a Gruden; somebody with a name, somebody with a ring. And he's going to have to give up some of the power. Now what he'd like is a situation where he can continue being a GM, at least in name and have a say. But to get a Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden, you're going to have to give up some of that power. And I do think he's going to need a credibility hire with this next one. He's got to bring somebody the public trusts.

Other than Jimmy Johnson, no head coach for the Dallas Cowboys has been allowed to name his own staff. Doesn't that have to change?

You think Bill Cowher is going to come here and coach with Jerry's staff? You think Jon Gruden is going to come here and coach with Jerry's staff? No. And that's one of the things. Whoever he hires, whatever name he hires, that's going to be one of the guard rules. I'm going to call the shots of football. And that means the players on the field; that means the coaches on the sideline. The next guy is going to have power over what goes on in the field.

Will he have power over discipline?

Cowher will get it and I think Gruden will get it. If you go out and hire a coordinator...if you promote Jason Garrett or you go out and hire a coordinator or whoever the hot assistant is, Jerry is still going to dictate the terms. But to go out and get the credibility hire, he's going to have to give up power.

Yep, I definitely agree we need a credibility hire for sure.

No doubt about it. If not we are going to get the same exact results.
