Gosselin: If Cowboys win Super Bowl, Wade Phillips retires on top
06:05 PM CDT on Thursday, September 2, 2010
NFL writer Rick Gosselin answered your questions in an NFL chat Thursday. Here are some highlights.
Tommy asks ... Who is the best tight end in the league in your opinion? Arguing over Tony Gonzalez and Jermichael Finley with a friend of mine.
Rick Gosselin: If I'm playing a game today, Jason Witten. If I'm playing a game 3-5 years from now, I'm not so sure I wouldn't take Finley. I passed through the Green Bay camp last week and they're expecting big things out of him in 2010. The best years of Tony Gonzalez are behind him. In his prime, I'd take Gonzalez over both Witten and Finley. Antonio Gates and Vernon Davis also would be in the discussion.
Patrick asks ... Do you see the Cowboys making a move for OL help?
Rick Gosselin: What's out there? Most teams are carrying 9-10 offensive linemen. That's 300+ of the best blockers in the land already tied up. Can the Cowboys improve themselves by claiming the 312th or 320nd best blocker off waivers? If you were going to trade for a blocker, it would have been Jamaal Brown -- a Pro Bowl caliber tackle who no longer had a position with the New Orleans Saints. But the Redskins have already snapped him up. It's a little bit late in the game to start thinking in terms of a quick fix. What the Cowboys have is likely what they'll play with this fall. Just knock on wood this group can stay healthy.
Rodney asks ... I think this is Wade Phillips' last season, regardless of how he does. At some point, it's got to be tough to work for Jerry and work in this league that long. Why do some coaches do this for so long? Seems the pressure would cut years off.
Rick Gosselin: That's logical. The Cowboys expect to go to the Super Bowl this season. If they do go -- and win -- I can see Phillips retiring on top. If they don't get there -- especially with a potential home field advantage -- I can see Jerry Jones sharing in the disappointment of his fan base and blaming the coach. The coaches who last generally don't have an owner as involved as Jones. George Halas coached the Chicago Bears forever because he never had anyone looking over his shoulder. He himself was the owner.
