Norm: How do you account for players saying they like Wade?

Goose: Talk is cheap.

They claim they haven’t quit?

If the last 2.5 games is their best effort, then they need to clean out the entire roster. You know, I talked to several other NFL front office people today and they all said the same thing … “The Cowboys definitely have talent on that roster”. There are a lot people with more to blame here than Wade Phillips, everything about the organization has Jerry’s thumb print on it.

What team has a foggier organizational chart? Cincy?
No, it’s pretty cut and dried there. Mike Brown as Owner/GM and then Marvin Lewis. Mike Brown loves troubled talent and brings it in and then asks Marvin Lewis to coach it. Look at the characters they’ve brought in. TO, Ocho Cinco, Tank, PacMan … you saw the situation that created last night with Ocho Cinco. If I was Carson Palmer I would have called time out and demanded he be pulled off the field.

Dimitroff has gone from New England to Atlanta and reorganized that franchise. Pioli went from NE to KC and reorganized there. It looks like the Lions now have reorganized their front office.
It’s easy. Draft well. If you don’t miss on drafts you’ll be a good team, that simple.

Do you think Jerry will change the organizational structure?
I think it’s been so bad he could give up some power to the right person, and that would be Cowher. Anything less that Cowher and Jerry keeps control. But Cowher only takes the job if he gets power.

Tony Dungy?
He’s not going back to coaching. He loves the freedom to watch his son play at University of Oregon. He’s got so much going on with books, speeches, counseling, working in prisons … he doesn’t want to be a coach anymore. Dungy would be a good fit here because he has no ego and he would let Jerry have the credit, but he doesn’t need football.

I hear Gruden, Cowher, Dungy .. familiar names. Who are the hot coordinators?
Defensively I think Leslie Frazier, Perrie Fewell and Rob Ryan at Cleveland because of the success of his brother. Brian Schottenheimer. Charlie Weiss you’re going to hear his name, I wouldn’t hire him. I think he’s just a good coordinator. Retreads would be Marty Morningweg, Cam Cameran and Mike Mularkey. Don Capers, you have to look. He has that defense playing at a high level with half the team out with injury. Dave Taub of Chicago is the best special teams coach in the league, and the nice thing about him is he isn’t forced to run the offense or defense. I want my head coach to be a head coach, worry about timeouts and managing the team during the game.

If you had to take one, which would you take?
Im a defensive guy, I would go Frazier or Fewell. Fewell has a head coaching background with a 7 game stint with the Bills. But Schottenheimer has been groomed his whole life for this.

Any chance Leslie Frazier replaces Chilly in Minny?
I think that’s a strong possibility.

What is a success for JG this season?
Signs of life. Effort. I think he needs to win more games than he loses. Marty Schottenhimer in 1984 took over a 1-7 team in midseason and went 4-4, and went on to win 200 more career games.

Do you think Cowboy fans will buy Jason Garrett as a HC?
No. I don’t think he’ll buy any assistant coach who hasn’t accomplished anything. I’ve said all fall that Jerry will have to bring in a name with a ring. This is the Dallas Cowboys and the expectations are to win now. This isn’t a place for on the job training.

Rank Cowher, Gruden and Billick.
I’d rank them in that order.

The thinking is Cowher would never work for an owner like Jerry. Is it just a matter of money?
No, he would want a change of power structure. He’s not going to come here with and put his legacy and his reputation on the line and let Jerry call the shots for him. You can get Gruden or Billick with a similar organizational structure that they have now, with a few adjustments. He’ll have to give up power to Cowher.

Would Jerry work back channels to start talking to 2-3 of these people?
I would hope he was doing that. He said even when Jimmy was coach that he had a list in his back pocket of 5 names who could coach the team … I hope if he still has that list he’s called 3 of them by now.
