NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has landed on the cover of TIME magazine. The accompanying article contains plenty of interesting nuggets.

Here’s the first one that caught our eye.

Sean Gregory of TIME writes that one of the options being considered for replacing kickoffs entails giving the ball to the team that would have been kicking off at its own 30, automatically facing a fourth down and 15 yards to go. The team can then choose to punt or go for it, via fake punt or otherwise.

In other words, the kickoff would be replaced with the punt, and the onside kick would be replaced with a fourth-down conversion roughly half the distance of Ray Rice’s recent catch-and-run.

The idea would be to remove completely the high-speed, open-field collisions between large men who dip their heads instinctively at impact and place extra pressure on the C3-C4 area of the spine. While other injuries would be possible during the punt play that replaces the kickoff, the risk of catastrophic injury would be reduced.

The move also would make punters, long snappers, and gunners more important, along with punt returners. In turn, kickoff specialists would become extinct, and return specialists who are much better returning kicks than punts would be far less valuable to the broader roster.

Goodell says the idea came from Bucs coach Greg Schiano. The fact that Goodell mentioned to Gregory it means that the league is at least considering it — and that the league perhaps wants to see how folks react to the possibility.

At this point, I'm open to just about any hare-brained idea for replacing what has become the most useless waste of time in football.

Yeah, I don't know what goes through the guys mind.

The NFL was not a flawed or broken product when he took over. It was and has been thriving for a reason.

He just feels the need to "touch" everything.

XPs give you, well, a point or two. Kickoffs don't.

Pwnt.

Moving the kickoffs to the 35 yard line was a far more idiotic idea than anything this asswipe could come up with to replace the kickoff entirely. Addressing this waste of time and making it useful again, anything other than just spotting the ball at some arbitrary yard line for the oncoming offense, is a plus in my book.

Fuck Goodell for changing the damned thing in the first place.

Goodell forgets that except for opening kickoffs at the start of each half, the Networks use that time from score to possession change to show 75 commercials.
The Networks ain't gonna go for that shit.

How the fuck is kickoffs a waste of time? Maybe you never played football and maybe you did but you never played on kickoff unit, because if you had... it's the most fun part of football. There's nothing like running down field at full speed and laying out a plyer if you can.

If I have to tell you how kickoffs, as they're currently done, are a waste of time, then I'm done. I give two shits about how much "fun" they are. Is that really the basis for your argument?

All I'm saying, homos, is that kickoffs, as they stand, are a waste of a play and anything at all to make the change of possession interesting should definitely be considered, regardless of how precious your retarded kickoffs are. And it's going to happen, so get used to the idea...

Most of the long term brain Injuries actually occur from all the smaller hits throughout a game.

A 13 year olds practice is the equivalent of being in several small car accidents.

I don't know about that. I have yet to hear of a 13 year old weighing at least 2 tons.
