..INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Commissioner Roger Goodell says if the NFL puts a team in Los Angeles, it is probable the league would expand to 34 franchises.

Appearing Thursday night on "Costas Live" on NBC Sports Network, Goodell said the league "doesn't want to move any of our teams."

"We probably don't want to go to 33" teams by adding just one new club if a suitable stadium is built in the Los Angeles area, Goodell said. Instead, the league would consider adding two. An odd number of teams would pose scheduling problems, including at least one club being off each week, and would create one division with five teams.

There has been speculation an LA stadium could house two NFL franchises, although Goodell did not address that with host Bob Costas.

Goodell says there are several issues that must be solved in LA, particularly which of two current stadium proposals is best. He didn't suggest any timetable for returning to Southern California.

Goodell talked about head injuries and said the NFL was helping other sports and the military through its research into concussions.

"We're in a leadership position in sports. People look up to the National Football League," he said. "We do have a game that's rough. There are inherent risks playing it. But the second-highest incident of concussions is girls' soccer. So what we're learning about concussions in football is helping other sports. Not just every level of football, but every other sport.

"Now the NFL is sharing our research with the Defense Department to help treat our military personnel in the field."

Earlier in the program, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and several current and former players were asked about lawsuits against the league by ex-players who claim they weren't warned about or protected enough against brain trauma during their careers.

The Associated Press published a story Thursday based on interviews with a dozen former players who have filed suits against the league. What emerged was, at best, a depiction of a culture of indifference on the part of the league and its teams toward concussions and other injuries. At worst, there was a strong sense of a willful disregard for players' well-being.

"We have to protect our players," Kraft said. "The league is very strong in this area and I hope we are prolonging careers" with the NFL's concussion research."

Added Colts center Jeff Saturday, a member of the players' union executive board: "The reality is we don't know what kind of damage it is doing long term. It's the biggest problem we face in the NFL now."

Just keep watering down the league talent Goodell. We need more Rex Grossmans having starting QB jobs.

Is anyone from LA County actually clamoring for a team, or is this all just the NFL wanting to force themselves onto the largest (or 2nd largest) market out there?

No one will even go to games in la.

No one goes to games in Florida and they have three teams.

The raiders and niners are dying for attendance and money for actual needed stadiums and they are going to ignore that and put two teams in la?

The chargers attendance sucks too.

Being a lifelong Los Angeles native until a year and a half ago I can attest to the whole LA has bad sports fans label. Dodger fans show up in the 3rd inning and leave in the 7th. Angel fans are better but that's really Orange County, not Los Angeles. Laker games are for celebrities only and the Clippers play in front of empty seats (before this year).

USC was the hot ticket for a few years but as soon as they weren't going undefeated, seats became available. They still do well, but 6 years ago, you had a hard time getting a ticket.

Hockey sucks so I have no idea who goes to those games.

LA will support a team, especially since they have gone so long without a NFL team. Two teams is asking for trouble. They will rally around one team since they are new for at least 5 years. After that, if the team isn't winning, good fucking luck.

I wish Goodell would go away, worst commissioner in all of sports, and worst NFL commissioner ever, by far

What if they put the team out in Riverside or San Bernadino? If I were starting a team out there I would look to appease the regular Joes first and expect the celebs to show up once we start winning.

this moron just approved 13 thursday night games starting in week 2.

what a blatant primetime money grab shitty thing to do.

these thursday games are not good for the teams or the fans.....its just good for the owners pockets. They are trying to grab as much primetime ad money as they can...

I really hate this.

oh and he wants regular season games in mexico.

again, this is all about money and expanding tv markets to gain ad revenue and merchandise sales.

in no way is any of this good for teams, players or fans.

players hate playing on sunday and then on thursday.

these owners just never have enough money.

I used to watch as many games as I could but now I don't like the Thursday, Saturday, or even Monday games anymore unless Dallas is playing. The pro game is starting to lose its luster and I blame Goodell.

Does this mean the price of Sunday Ticket is going down?

yeah right.

I wish I had the ability to give it up, but I have to watch every nfc east game. I am like a heroin addict chasing the dragon every week.

sunday ticket is only going to go up, but it will be awesome how they try and tell us it shouldnt go down.

I know they will try but think they will have a hard time justifying charging the same or more for less games. If more games are planned for Thursdays that's less games you need Sunday Ticket for.

yep

for people with families who like to attend games or people with very fluid jobs who are not out at the same time everyday these thursday games are a slap in the face.

Football is meant for sundays and monday night...

I used to love the two saturday afternoon games in december. But there is no ad money in that so we are stuck with thursday games.

its just not good for anyone but the owners pockets.

yep.

one game each week on thursday, 3 games on thanksgiving and saturday games in december.

that is alot of games taken from sunday ticket.

they will probably just create some new phony accessory to sell sunday ticket as improved.

Good keep it up so I can cancel my Sunday ticket. Sooner or later they will cover them all.

Can they? I mean it's owned by the NFL.
