Former Cowboys linebacker Godfrey Myles has suffered a heart attack and is currently in critical condition in Florida. ESPN Radio’s Brady Ackerman is reporting that Myles is currently on life support. The University of Florida, Myles’ alma mater, has also confirmed the report via twitter.

Myles played six seasons with the Cowboys from 1991-96, earning three Super Bowl rings as a primary backup and special teams player. In 1995, the Cowboys’ third Super Bowl winning season in four years, Myles started 11 games and recorded a career-best 99 tackles, including 15 in a December win over the Giants.

He was a third-round pick out of Florida in 1991.

Former Cowboys linebacker Godfrey Myles dies after stroke

SportsDayDFW sports

The official account of Florida Gators football, GatorZoneFB, reported this on Twitter:

"RIP former #Gators LB Godfrey Myles (Lettered 88-90). He passed away after a massive stroke. Thoughts are with his family."

Myles played for the Cowboys from 1991-1996, competing on Dallas' three Super Bowl teams during the Jerry Jones era. He was drafted out of Florida by the Cowboys in the third round of the 1991 draft.

One of Myles' more frustrating moments came in one of the biggest games of his life. Myles started Super Bowl XXVII and the Cowboys had just taken a 14-7 lead on Jimmy Jones' two-yard fumble return. When Myles ran into the end zone to congratulate his teammate, Jones pushed Myles in the back, and Myles fell over a Buffalo player. His foot got caught in the soft grass and he missed the rest of the game.

"I have really mixed feelings about that Super Bowl," he said. "I was real excited and it's one of the most memorable experiences of my life, but the injury really put a damper on it.

"While everybody else spent the next few months celebrating, I was rehabing seven days a week. But it's something that I have accepted and tried not to let bother me."

Myles told Jean-Jacques Taylor in an interview in 1995 that he loved stopping the ground game.

"I love to play the run," Myles said. "I love it when teams bring a bunch of guys and try to bloody our nose. I love the challenge of stopping them. That's why the New York game was so much fun."

Myles also loved playing for Florida. The following is from a story during his time with the Cowboys.

  • Myles said he grew up in a neighborhood in Miami that constantly forced him to make good choices to stay out of trouble. When he arrived at Florida, he says he made friends from varied cultures and lifestyles, and it changed his view of life.

As far as football is concerned, Myles said he couldn't have made a better choice than Florida. In his last 19 starts, Myles had 3 1/2 sacks, 15 tackles for losses, four interceptions, eight pass deflections, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

"I had a lot of good games," said Myles, "and I loved playing teams like Tennessee, Alabama."
