IRVING -- Cowboys second-round pick Bruce Carter said Thursday that he's still a month away from being released to practice with the team.
Carter, the rookie linebacker out of North Carolina, said he's been told that he won't be fully released to practice with the team until Oct. 23, which is the Sunday the Cowboys host St. Louis. So, that means Carter really wouldn't practice with the team for the first time until Wednesday, Oct. 26.
Carter is on the reserve non-football injury list and can't play in the Cowboys' first six games. The first game he's allowed to play in is a Sunday night game at Philadelphia on Oct. 30. But given that Carter can't start practicing until four days prior to the game at the Eagles, it's unlikely he would be active for the Philadelphia game. When he does return to the field it could be more in a special teams role as he works his way into the defense.
Carter underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction surgery on his left knee Dec. 14. He injured his knee Nov. 20 in a game against North Carolina State.
The Cowboys anticipated when they drafted Carter that he wouldn't be ready to practice by the start of training camp. Originally, Carter was told it would take at least eight months for him to return to the field.
Carter said a few weeks ago that he still had some soreness at times in his knee but said Thursday that he doesn't have any more soreness right now.
