He was in Poseiden Adventure, and was Lex Luther in the Superman movies (Christopher Reeve versions)

It took awhile for the authorities to identify the bodies as being Gene and his wife, as they had been there (deceased) for some time ( 2 weeks??).

Hackman once explained his creative approach by saying, “Each scene, I look for something not written down.”

As to Gene knowing whether his wife passed or not... I would consider that they had a large enough house that Gene had his own bathroom and walk in shower for his needs, and that his wife used another separate bathroom with all of her stuff there.

So it may be that Gene never went to the part of the house that had the bathroom she used.

People that suffer from Dementia don't know what day it is. They know it's daytime or nighttime.

Just a tragic thing that she died suddenly from a disease. And with her gone, that likely led to Gene not getting his meds, and to his eventual demise.

It's just so horrible. It echoes his last line in "Unforgiven."
