Garrett's assessment of Romo in 2010: 'There were a lot of good things but there were obviously some areas to improve upon'

Rainer Sabin / Reporter

On Tuesday, Cowboys interim coach Jason Garrett conjured an epitaph that could be engraved on the mythical headstone for Tony Romo's 2010 season: "There were a lot of good things but there were obviously some areas to improve upon."

Only hours after news leaked that Romo would be placed on injured reserve, Garrett indulged the media and provided a retrospective on Romo's truncated season that truly ended Oct. 25 when the franchise quarterback fractured his left collarbone after being slammed into the turf by Giants linebacker Michael Boley.

Romo started six games and lost five of them. He completed 69.5 percent of the 213 passes he attempted and threw for 1,605 yards and 11 touchdowns. But he also was responsible for seven interceptions.

"I thought he did a lot of positive things for us," Garrett said. "We weren't playing quite as well on offense as we wanted to and as we had in the past.

"The one thing that I think he would look at that would be an area where he needs to improve and really go back to how we played in 2009 is the turnovers were more than they had been. He made a number of plays. We have all talked about it. Some of the turnovers were tipped balls and those kinds of things.

"But whenever you have the ball in your hand, you're responsible for it. Tony's made great strides in that area, but I think when he looks at it and when we look at it we say `We've got to continue to improve in that area.'"

In summary, Romo's performance wasn't superb. But it certainly wasn't awful. It was merely satisfactory.
