Jason Garrett is the Cowboys next head coach

David Moore / Reporter

Jason Garrett will be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys have called a press conference for 1:30 this afternoon at Cowboys Stadium to introduce Garrett as the eighth head coach in franchise history. The announcement that Garrett will have the interim title removed comes four days after the Cowboys completed one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history.

The Cowboys released head coach Wade Phillips after a 1-7 start and turned to Garrett on an interim basis. The players responded to his message and disciplined approach and rebounded with a 5-3 record. The Cowboys three losses under Garrett were by a combined total of seven points.

Garrett is the first person in franchise history to work his way up through the ranks. He has been a backup quarterback, an offensive coordinator and now head coach of the Cowboys.

The move comes as no surprise. Garrett was the favorite to land this job when owner Jerry Jones turned to him in November. But Jones faith in Garrett's promise goes back even further when the Cowboys owner decided to install him as the team's offensive coordinator in 2007 before he hired Phillips as head coach.

What a shame this was.

Another dark day as a Dallas Cowboy fan. More status quo in the power structure. We didn't even consider real change.

Now, will Jerry allow Jason to pick his own staff and back off?

If not we will continue to struggle as an organization.

Obviously not.

The con man will talk about "input" and such, but the fact is most of the faces will be familiar next year.

It's a re-shuffling of the deck chairs on the Titanic. And it will probably be enough to appease the window licking faithful of this franchise.

I disagree.

This is a great hire, and I think Jason will accomplish a lot in Dallas.

He'll bring us our next Lombardi trophy.

Yeah, as long as Jerry allows him to, c'mon you have seen what Jerry is like.

He's a lousy GM that won't admit he's failed at his position.

I'm all for Garrett, I just think we won't see his full potential because Jerry is pulling the strings.

He's not experienced enough for Jerry to give him anymore control that what he has already.

I think people exaggerate that power that Jerry is throwing around. This isn't 2002.

For example, I don't for an instance believe that whatever DC is hired, that Jason isn't going to approve the guy.

I don't think Jerry is going to force players or coaches on Jason. Rather, my biggest concern is that Jerry will continue to do his BS training camp tours, interrupting practices with celebrities, etc etc etc.

There shouldn't be a single defensive coach that remains on this staff.

If Garrett can't hire his own staff without input from the fake General Manager, then this is all a shame and we will continue to fail.

Jerry Jones is probably the single least informed football opinion that you'll find in the league. You can't win when that kind of football "mind" is dictating your structure.

And, really, it all comes down to this for me. You're talking about a guy who was miserable with the only real coaches he's had here. He certainly isn't miserable with Garrett. That should tell you something.

Since that probably didn't tell you something, cr1doodoo, I should clarify....

Jerry's not miserable with Garrett because Garrett poses no threat to his authority.

That's yet to be determined.

Your right, there shouldn't. We just have to all sit back and hope Jerry let's Jason do this himself.

But in the end we all know the result. I just don't understand this guy, he says he wants to win, but the main thing from winning it all is in the way.

No, we all don't.

I think Jason is going to do quite well in Dallas.

I don't believe for a second that he's going to be the spineless pushovers that Wade, Campo were. Nor will he be as indifferent and content as Switzer. Or as past his prime and unmotivated as Parcells was.

We'll have to wait and see what changes are made to the staff.

But if you see schlubs like Dave Campo and Paul Pasqualoni still here in the summer, then you know nothing's changed and we'll continue to fail.

I agree, they both have to be gone.

Jason is smart enough to know who can help this defense and who can't.

I'd take the Princeton grads advice over the oil salesman.

At 1-7, I was actually excited about this offseason. I thought real change was a possibility. Another one of those take your medicine coaching hires for Jerry that takes his binky away for the good of the team.

But then Jason Garrett got in the way and gave Jerry another out and an extension of the status quo. And, to nobody's surprise, he's falling over himself with glee to retain him.

That's how I see it. The guy can't con me. He never could.

Within five seconds of the start of the press conference, I'll want to plant a claw hammer into Jerry's skull.

A banquet of bullshat is on the way as he tries to appear like he knows what's he's talking about and that everybody in the room should hang on his ever word as if there's great value to what he's saying.

Then pass it over to Garrett who talks about going through the process, stacking good days upon good days whiling avoiding the sun and monitoring your moles.

Lipsmack.

Wink.

Presser over. The only thing that changed was the date on the calendar.

In other words, it'll be like reading one of your posts.

I hope one of those Valley Ranch Zombies ask Garrett straight up.

..." Can/Will you hire/fire your own assistants " (having input means nothing) ... " How much input will you have with personnel decisions "....

Sources: Jason Garrett is Dallas' coach

By Calvin Watkins and Todd Archer
ESPNDallas.com
IRVING, Texas -- The expected has happened. Jason Garrett has been named the Dallas Cowboys' head coach, sources said Thursday.

The team has scheduled a press conference for 1:30 p.m. CT to make an official announcement.

Terms of the deal were not available, but Garrett had one year remaining on his contract as the assistant head coach that paid him $3.5 million annually.

Considered the favorite all along, Garrett is the eighth coach in franchise history and owner/general manager Jerry Jones did not feel the need for an exhaustive search. He interviewed wide receivers coach Ray Sherman to comply with the NFL's Rooney Rule, which states a team must talk with at least one minority coach during the process.

He also interviewed Miami Dolphins assistant Todd Bowles, a former Dallas assistant.

Jones wanted to finalize the deal quickly because he didn't want other teams with vacancies getting their hands on Garrett.

Garrett played for the Cowboys as a backup quarterback from 1993-99 and his father, Jim, was a longtime scout for the team. Two brothers are also in the organization -- John Garrett is the Cowboys' tight ends coach and Judd Garrett is director of pro scouting.

Jason Garrett is the first former player to become this team's head coach and the seventh hire made by Jones since 1989.

Garrett was named Dallas' interim coach on Nov. 18 after Jones fired Wade Phillips following a 1-7 start to the season. The Cowboys finished 5-3 under Garrett, including a 14-13 win Sunday at Philadelphia in which third-string quarterback Stephen McGee started.

The Cowboys' three losses were by a combined seven points to New Orleans, Philadelphia and Arizona. By contrast the Cowboys' final two losses under Phillips were by 18 and 38 points, with the defense falling apart after quarterback Tony Romo suffered what turned out to be a season-ending broken left collarbone.

Garrett immediately changed what was a lackadaisical atmosphere around Valley Ranch into a more up-tempo setting in practice. Players were full pads in Wednesday practices, which was rare under Phillips. He made players more accountable, fining those who were late to meetings or not compliant with a dress code for road games.

After Sunday's win most players expressed the hope that Garrett would lose the interim tag. Captains Bradie James, Keith Brooking, DeMarcus Ware, Jason Witten and Romo sung Garrett's praises.

For Garrett, 44, this seems like the culmination of a process that started when he joined the Cowboys before Jones even named Phillips the coach in 2007. He was viewed as the coach-in-waiting ever since but interviewed with Baltimore, Atlanta, Denver, Detroit and St. Louis. After Garrett turned down the Ravens, Jones made him the highest-paid assistant in the NFL with a $3.5 million salary.

In his four-year run as offensive coordinator, the Cowboys have not had an offense rank lower than 13th in the NFL. It has not always been perfect, like calling a play late in the first half of the season opener at Washington that turned into a Redskins touchdown after a Tashard Choice fumble. In 2008, wide receiver Terrell Owens questioned Garrett's playcalling and Baltimore's Ed Reed said the Cowboys were predictable.

But 2010 may have been his best year after losing Romo to the injury. The Cowboys finished the year ranked No. 7 in offense in terms of yards (364.2) and points (24.6) per game, while having to use backups Jon Kitna and McGee for the final 10 games. The Cowboys scored at least 26 points in seven of Garrett's eight games as interim coach.

Now comes the hard part of putting a full-time stamp on the team when there could be a lockout if the NFL and its players' association are unable to reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement.

Garrett could make changes to the coaching staff, but he said he would continue as the playcaller if he remained as head coach. He will also be heavily involved in shaping the roster; decisions have to be made on high-priced veterans like Marion Barber, Roy Williams, Leonard Davis, Marc Colombo and Terence Newman.

Calvin Watkins and Todd Archer cover the Cowboys for ESPNDallas.com.
