Garrett: 'It's a loser's mentality to say we want to lose games so we get a better draft pick'

At the NFL Draft in April, the Cowboys will have the ninth selection - their highest pick since 2003. But they could have been even closer to the top of the pecking order had Philadelphia prevailed on Sunday.

Interim coach Jason Garrett is aware of that, but he wouldn't change the outcome of the Cowboys' season finale even if a loss would have improved their draft position.

"I just think it's a loser's mentality to say we want to lose games so we get a better draft pick," Garrett said. "I think the league is littered with players who were drafted at Pick 199 and they go on to be Hall of Fame players. To say that the ninth pick is any worse than the sixth pick or the 13th pick or whatever it is, you want to win ballgames and the draft order will shake itself out."

Garrett said that his top priority is to achieve success with the team he has in place.

"It's important to be your best every opportunity you can," Garrett said. "Everyone knows there are a lot of different circumstances that go into end-of-the-season games. We played a lot of different combinations of players as did everybody around the league. Having said that, you want to win games. You try to put your players in competitive situations to win all the time. Winning is a habit."

I think it's actually a loser mentality to feel good about a meaningless win at the end of a horrific season.

If you're looking big picture, then the higher draft pick is the way to go.

Well, in Jason's case he needed a win to get this job.

We won against Indy, New York and Philly on the road in the second half of the season that's huge, especially with your second and third string quarterbacks.

I would of taken a loss too, but it does make sense to play to win no matter what the circumstances are.

I wouldn't expect any head coach to deliberately tank a season for a draft pick. And I wouldn't expect any player to do it either.

But I would understand why the fans would want it to happen. And I don't think it's a loser mentality. I think it's actually a winner's mentality, since we shouldn't care about being 5-11 or 6-10. We only care about winning titles. If you're not gonna win one this year, then give us the higher draft pick to help us do it in the future. Only a loser mentality celebrates a win like Sunday's.

But Garrett's in full blown tough guy act right now. I'm not surprised he said that.
