NEW YORK--According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Jets coach Rex Ryan offered a $10,000 bounty to any defensive player who could injure quarterback Mark Sanchez. The report was confirmed by several defensemen from around the league.
“Yea. Definitely,” said Bills defensive lineman Marcell Dareus. “Rex approached me before our game in Week 9 and basically told me that if I was able to knock Mark out of the game there was money in it for me. To me it seemed a little out there, but I guess Rex was in a tricky situation, not liking his quarterback but under pressure to start him because he was a high draft pick. Bad luck for Rex that the guy's only skill is evading the rush.”
Another player, who asked not to be identified, said that Ryan approached him before a game with an envelope full of hundred dollar bills.
“He got my attention during warm ups and gestured for me to come join him in the tunnel,” recalled the player. “He said ‘this envelope is for you,' and put it in my pocket. Then he took it back out again and said, ‘Or maybe it isn’t. Catch my drift?’ And I’m like ‘no’. And he’s like, ‘let’s just say if someone were to injure my quarterback today, this envelope of cash might find its way into their locker.’ So I tried my best to injure the guy but I couldn’t get to him. It’s too bad, too, because I’ve been wanting to kill that guy ever since my wife said she wants to bang him.”
So far, a total of 10 players have come forward with stories about Ryan offering a bounty on Sanchez’ head. As a result, the league is preparing to launch an investigation into the matter, with Commissioner Roger Goodell calling the allegations “very serious.”
“We take these kinds of allegations very seriously,” Goodell said. “If evidence of wrongdoing is uncovered, the penalties will be severe. Even if the allegations prove to be completely false, the penalties will still be severe. That's how committed we are to player safety.”
Many of Ryan’s current and former players have expressed shock at the allegations.
“That just doesn’t make sense to me,” said linebacker Bart Scott. “Why not just bench the guy if you don’t like him? Also – and this is the more pertinent question – why not just offer the bounty to one of us to injure him in practice? We're supposed to be a family, but then when he wants someone to break his quarterback’s leg, he looks outside of our locker room. Hypocrite.”
As for Sanchez, he’s taking the allegations in stride and remains, at least now, committed to his coach.
“I’m taking this all with a grain of salt until I hear all the facts,” said Sanchez. “Coach Ryan has been good to me and I’m not going to turn my back on him just yet. Plus, even if it is true, I have to take some of the blame myself. My performance was inconsistent to say the least. Also did you see that GQ spread? After looking at that, I wanted to take out a bounty on my own head.”
