The Kansas City Chiefs released starting tackle Eric Winston on Wednesday, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Winston, 29, started all 16 games at right tackle this past season, his lone campaign in Kansas City after spending his first six years with Houston. He was expected to earn a base salary of just under $5 million in 2013.


Winston made headlines in early December when he spoke out against home fans who cheered when quarterback Matt Cassel suffered a concussion in a game against the Baltimore Ravens.
