Fred Smoot: Phillip Daniels ran his mouth too much about bounties

Former Redskins teammates Fred Smoot and Phillip Daniels have both publicly supported their old defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, who has been suspended indefinitely for overseeing the payment of bounties. But Smoot doesn’t think Daniels has been supportive enough.
In an interview on 106.7 The Fan, Smoot said Daniels has been talking too much about Williams, although Smoot didn’t specify what, exactly, Daniels said that was wrong.
“I can’t say I’m fully upset at Phillip Daniels,” Smoot said, via Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post. “Let’s just say I heard something through the players grapevine that I’m not proud of, that’s all. Let’s just say he ran his mouth too much and didn’t even know what he was talking about. I don’t understand, just to bring that heat to the Redskins, I don’t understand that either.”
Daniels has said Williams gave players money for big games, which is a violation of the league’s rules against non-contract payment. But Daniels also defended Williams, saying he wasn’t aware of Williams ever encouraging a player to injure an opponent. So it’s surprising that Smoot is so unhappy with what Daniels said, considering how many people have offered up so much more critical testimony about Williams’ use of bounties.
What’s not surprising is that Smoot also had critical things to say about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for suspending Williams.
“It’s a dictatorship, to me,” Smoot said. “I think we need to start a congress of retired players or something, that these [rulings] has to get cycled through. I think it should be a process. I don’t think one man should have all that power. And you can just look and see what he’s doing to players and what he’s doing to coaches. And I don’t know, I think he’s starting to rub people the wrong way.”
