Fraley: You couldn't get a bag of footballs for Marion Barber in a deal

Gerry Fraley, Cowboys writer for SportsDayDFW.com and The Dallas Morning News, answered questions in a chat Friday. Some excerpts:

On the possibility that there is enough film on Jason Garrett's offense for defenses to know what's coming:

In this era of technology, everyone has reams of video on opposing offenses. I've always maintained that play-calling is secondary to execution. If a play is run well, it will work.

On if you could trade Marion Barber for an offensive lineman or a draft pick:

You could not get a bag of footballs for Barber at this time. His production is down, and his contract is bad.

On the need for better run/pass balance:

Sometimes the game situation dictates play selection. Cowboys have played from behind most of the time. That increases the need to throw.

On the bigger disappointment, the Cowboys or Vikings:

Vikings. They were within a bad Brett Favre throw of the Super Bowl last season. Cowboys won a wild-card game, but everyone seemed to forget the clubbing they took from the Vikings in the divisional round.

On who would coach next year if Cowboys have bad season:

I know this sounds like a cliche, but I do not see a strong-willed coach such as Bill Cowher taking this job. Those type of coaches want the amount of autonomy that the Cowboys do not give their coaches in this system. Favorite: Jason Garrett. Long-short worth watching: Joe DeCamillis.

On which of the Cowboys is the most personable and the biggest surprise to deal with:

For starters, Marion Barber is even more unprofessional than I had been led to believe.

I gained a lot of respect for Leonard Davis after the Tennessee game. While some of his teammates refuse to respond and explain their actions after a loss -- that's you, Marc Colombo -- Davis handled his benching with absolute professionalism.

In general, the defense has far more stand-up guys than the offense. too many divas on the offense.

It takes a special breed of idiot to ask if defenses have figured Garrett out after a 500 plus yard performance last Sunday.

Shit..I'd take a win over a five hundred yard passing game, that doesn't guarantee victory.

Give me a 50/50 run to pass and a win and I'm a happy camper.

And a defense that can commit turnovers, and finally a team that's disciplined and smart. None of the above here except good passing numbers.

That's besides the point.

If defenses have figured out your coordinator, you certainly don't rack up 500 yards of offense.

It's beyond asinine.

Right, got carried off the subject a bit.

But yeah, saying that is idiotic. It's amazing how some of these writers got their jobs.

He was answering a fan response.

Fans will never blame the players. It's easier to accept that it's the play calling. It's too painful for a homer fan to admit their talent just isn't good enough.

Noboby's figured out Garrett. There isn't anything wrong with him besides having to function without an NFL caliber offensive line.
