SportsDay writer Gerry Fraley chatted with fans on Monday and answered questions about the Dallas Cowboys. Here are some highlights:
What are your thoughts on Jason Garrett and his job in picking out the new coaches for the Cowboys?
Garrett gets credit for being aggressive. The most significant point is that he picked the coaches rather than have them forced upon him by Jerry Jones. The previous arrangement was dysfunctional.
Rob Ryan is the most prominent addition, but let's keep in mind that the Cowboys talked to Greg Munansky (San Diego ) and Vic Fangio (San Francisco) before getting to Ryan. I'm not sure he was Garrett's first choice.
Jimmy Robinson could have the biggest impact of the new hires. By dumping Ray Sherman so quickly, Garrett made it clear that he did not like the progress of the wide receivers. You can narrow that down to he did not like the progress of Dez Bryant. Robinson can fix that situation.
What free agent cornerback do you think the Cowboys will bring in or do you think they will just draft one?
Not a good draft for corners after the top two: Peterson and the Nebraska kid [Prince Amukamara] whose name I can never spell. I'd look for at least one FA corner to be signed. Maybe Eric Wright . He was good at Cleveland in 2009 but had a bad year last season. Give him a one-year deal with the chance to re-establish himself.
Any thought to moving Terence Newman to safety?
No. Newman does not tackle well enough to play either safety. In a Ryan defense, linebackers and safeties must by sharp tacklers.
If we draft a corner with our first round pick, why is it that we automatically have to cut Terence Newman?
I don't think anyone said Newman will be automatically cut if a corner is taken in the first round. Ryan likes Newman and has indicated he will be more productive in this system. It sounds as Ryan believes Newman was not used correctly last season.
