Fraley: Michael Irvin would last two days as Cowboys' wide receiver coach

SportsDayDFW.com writer Gerry Fraley chatted with fans on Monday and answered questions about the Dallas Cowboys. Here are some highlights:

How about Michael Irvin as wide receiver coach?

He'd last about two days. Most of these guys do not come close to his work ethic. Plus, great players have difficulty getting the message across to mere mortals.

Any chance Joe DeCamillis and Jason Garrett didn't get along? Or is he the next one out the door?

Not aware of a breach. Joe D. is a very good coach, and I would think Jason Garrett would want to surround himself with as many good coaches as possible. The only reason that I can think of for a change is that Joe D. is seen as a Wade Phillips guy and Garrett may want to eliminate all traces of the previous staff. He has not done that so far, turning down Houston's request to interview LB coach Reggie Herring.

Do you think Phil Costa has a chance to start next season?

Not sure if he's ready to start, but he deserves a good look throughout the offense.
Costa is very smart, essential for a center. He is also very tough. The one knock on Costa is that he has short arms, which prevent him from getting a good "punch" on linemen. He's enough of a football player to know how to make up for that.

Were the Cowboys wrong about Flozell Adams or is this the first year of a contract that will show Dallas was right?

Right and wrong: Right that Flozell could not play left tackle effectively any longer but wrong in thinking that he could not handle the switch to the right side. He would have been much better than the battered Colombo this year.

I hope all this buzz on Costa is legit and he's a find. I just don't see it. I think the guy will be physically overwhelmed in the NFL.

I do believe he's smart...and that's an often overlooked trait in a center.

As for Irvin, I don't know about that. Maybe it wouldn't be for him. Most great players live off their great ability. Mike was a technician and a rare leader. I think he has the traits to be a good coach if he wanted to be.

Peyton Manning's a great player. I think if he wanted to coach, he'd be great at that too.

I like Costa, but I won't commit to him just yet.

I wanted to see more of him this year towards the end of the season, but it never happened.
