The Dallas Morning News sports writer Gerry Fraley answered questions about the Cowboys in a chat on Monday. Here are a few highlights.
On the Cowboys needing a quarterback with heart:
Fraley: Will say Kitna is an outstanding leader, which the position demands. He spans all elements of the team and knows how to bring people together with one goal. Romo does not have that makeup. Maybe it is because Kitna has more experience. Maybe it is not in Romo's nature. (Players can spot another player forcing himself to be a leader.) Kitna does have some admirable qualities.
On David Buehler remaining the Cowboys kicker:
Fraley: He's hanging on by a thread right now. The one problem is the Cowboys would possibly have to bring in two kickers to replace him: one for PATs and field goals; another for kick-offs.
On why the Cowboys played so well on Sunday:
Fraley: Some players realized their jobs are at stake. That can be a great motivator. Any player who makes a ``business decision'' and pulls back because the Cowboys are out of contention is foolish. Every other team in the league is watching. Their evaluators can tell who pulled back.
On if fans should be re-energized by what they saw on Sunday:
Fraley: I'd wait for more results and wonder why these players cheated you with sub-par performances in the first eight games. In a sense, the win against the Giants serves as an indictment of the players for being too casual about this season beforehand.
On if Paul Pasqualoni's defensive style is more likely to cause turnovers:
Fraley: Three takeaways, but one was because of a broken route by a receiver and another was because of a bad snap from the shotgun formation. Pasqualoni has encouraged his players to think turnover more often, and that is a change.
