SportsDayDFW.com writer Gerry Fraley chatted with fans on Friday and answered questions about the Dallas Cowboys as they prepare to play the Indianapolis Colts. Here are some highlights:
Would you draft a safety in the first round next year or would you get one through free agency?
I'd always use the draft as the first resort. Free agency carries far more risks. The veteran player has miles on him. That said, I'm not sure if there is a safety in the coming draft worthy of being taking among the top 15. We have to consult our draft guru, Rick Gosselin, on that.
Do you think Dallas will address the quarterback position and groom a young QB next year?
Tony Romo is the quarterback. At age 30, he should have at least six more good seasons.
I don't buy the idea that Tashard Choice will make all the difference at RB. Marion Barber is on the decline. Do the Cowboys need to draft a RB next year?
Not saying Choice is a savior, but he's better than a guy who averages 3.1 yards per carry. Drafting a back would be a good idea. Felix Jones carries a lot of questions, too.
If NFL went to pot would Jerry be able to pay for the stadium?
That is a very significant question. Without being privy to Jones' finances, I can say that he is very nervous about the possibility of a lockout of any length. He needs dates at Cowboys Stadium. If it sits empty on autumn Sundays, he is in trouble. When there is a settlement, look for Jerry to have played an important role. He needs the games.
Who gets the blame for poor drafts the last 2 years? Other than Dez, is there a starter among them? Has Garret shown any ability to evaluate talent?
Start at the top: Jerry. Dez Bryant and Sean Lee should become starters. As for the 2009 class, it's a wasteland. I don't know how much Garrett was involved in the draft.
As a fan, I am hedging on rooting for the Cowboys to lose, to get a new head coach and a top 5 pick. Is that wrong?
No. That is visionary thinking. The higher draft pick is worth far more than a few meaningless late-season wins. Ask Green Bay, which got stuck with Mandarich after winning the 1988 finale.
