SportsDayDFW.com writer Gerry Fraley chatted with fans on Wednesday and answered questions about the Dallas Cowboys and the 2011 draft. Here are some highlights:
Do you think it would be Dallas' best strategy to drop 5 or 6 spots in the first round and pick up mid-2nd round pick so they can get a couple offensive lineman?
No. I'm not a big proponent of trading down in the first round, especially when a team is in need of big-time talent. The Cowboys hurt the 2009 draft by trading down. The top-10 player, in theory, should be worth more than the later picks combined. Of course, that means the Cowboys have to make a good pick. No guarantee there.
Is the reluctance to play younger players Jerry Jones's or Wade Phillips's philosophy?
Both share in that. Jerry needs a competitive team year-in and year-out to keep selling tickets and luxury boxes at his ballpark. Don’t think he would ever endorse a rebuilding, go-with-youth program. Wade knew his job was on the line every week. In that situation, the coach will always play veterans. For a Cowboys' coach to go with younger players, he has to get a major sign of support from Jerry Jones. A long-term contract would be a good place to start.
If the Cowboys can’t drop back and the top two cornerbacks are gone, do the Cowboys take OT Nate Solder from Colorado?
Solder has been very good in workouts. There are several good OTs here: Sherrodd of Mississippi State, Carimi of Wisconsin and Costonzo of Boston College. All could go in the first round, but probably in the second half. Solder is very talented but still learning. He went to Colorado as a tight end and has only three years at tackle.
Is Jerry Jones saying the Cowboys being set at cornerback just a smoke screen to see if Prince Amukamara falls?
Maybe, but I keep hearing that Rob Ryan really likes Newman and Jenkins and has told Jerry that they can be fixed with only a few minor changes. I would like to hear that from Rob Ryan himself, but Jason Garrett has muzzled his coaches. Odd that Garrett would surround himself with coaches whom he does not trust to talk about the team.
I know it’s a very long shot, but is there any chance Jerry even attempts to go after Oakland’s cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha?
Not sure if it's that long a shot. Jerry can get rid of a few rich contracts to create room for Asomugha. He played for Rob Ryan, so you know the DC will be pushing for it. Jerry has to at least explore the possibility, but my guess is Asomugha ends up with the Jets or Green Bay.
