FORT WORTH — A former Kennedale High School teacher listened Thursday as three young men recounted sexual encounters with her in graphic detail.
“We just went to her house and we did what we did,” said a 19-year-old, identified in court by the pseudonym “Richard Williams.”
Brittni Colleps, 28, is accused of having improper relationships with five students in the spring semester of 2011. At least three of the alleged encounters involved more than one student, prosecutors say.
The witnesses, all teammates on the school’s football and track teams, said they didn’t want to tell on their English teacher.
“I didn’t want to get her in trouble,” said a 20-year-old referred to as “Jordan Smith.”
Colleps, a married mother of three, turned herself in to police in May 2011 after a cellphone video emerged that allegedly shows her having sex with several students at her Arlington home.
At the time, Colleps’ husband was away serving in the military. He was in court for part of Thursday’s hearing and has previously said he stands by his wife.
The teens said the first group sex encounter was instigated by a game of “truth or dare” with Colleps. They said she would also model skimpy lingerie for them and showed them sex toys.
For much of Thursday, the second day of testimony, the defendant sat emotionless as three young men took turns recounting their encounters in a Tarrant County courtroom.
Prosecutors say one of those encounters was captured on video, recovered from a student’s volunteered cellphone.
The video, shown to jurors in its entirety Tuesday, never shows the face of the woman involved, but it does show her backside with a tattoo described as the Superman logo with a “B.”
A still image of the tattoo from the video was shown side-by-side with a photograph of the defendant’s tattoo taken after her arrest.
Colleps did not testify. The day ended with the state resting its case and the defense declining to present any evidence.
The students were all 18 or older at the time, but it’s illegal for an educator to have a relationship with a student. That law was challenged by the defense at the end of the day’s hearing, but Assistant District Attorney Tim Rodgers explained the need for the law.
“Teachers being able to have unregulated sex with students compromises that safe and secure environment,” the prosecutor said.
Colleps’ attorney said his client was not offered a plea bargain because the prosecution wanted the jury to determine the severity of the crimes committed. She faces five counts of improper relationship with students, with a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail and a $50,000 fine.
Closing arguments are scheduled to begin Friday.
