Former Cowboys cornerback Dwayne Goodrich has been paroled from prison, after spending eight years behind bars for the hit-and-run deaths of two people back in 2003.

According to the account in the Dallas Morning News today, Goodrich was released around noon on Wednesday from the Huntsville Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He is reportedly staying with family members in the area, and was greeted by around 50 friends and family members on Wednesday night.

The profoundly sad turn of events took place back in 2003, the year following his release from the Cowboys. Goodrich was traveling in his BMW at a high rate of speed along I-35 in Dallas when he inadvertently struck two Good Samaritans, Joseph Woods and Demont Matthews, who were trying to rescue another driver from a burning car. The two were killed, and a third man, Shuki Joseph, sustained some serious injuries. Goodrich did not stop, but was arrested the next day.

Goodrich was drafted in the second round of the 2000 NFL Draft, and played in 16 games with the team from 2000 to 2002. In this span, he recorded eight tackles.
