This offseason, the Cowboys be could making their most significant changes to the defense since 2005, when then-coach Bill Parcells switched to a 3-4 scheme.
The front is staying the same in 2011, but given the unit's inconsistencies (the Cowboys allowed a franchise-record 436 points) and uncertainty (five starters and key rotation players are scheduled for free agency), things could look a lot different next season.
Plus, new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has to get the right pieces to hit his version of the 3-4, considered more of a two-gap defense. He can't do it all in one offseason, and to some extent he'll have to adjust to the talent around him.
The Cowboys are heading to the Senior Bowl next week to evaluate some of the nation's top prospects. Could this wind up being a defensive draft, like in 2005?
That year the Cowboys drafted four starters and five key defensive contributors (DeMarcus Ware, Marcus Spears, Kevin Burnett, Chris Canty, Jay Ratliff) with eight overall picks. Having two first-rounders helped.
With normal free agency uncertain due to the CBA negotiations, the draft could be the best way to get Ryan's group back on track.
