(Editor's Note: With NFL free agency still to come, the Cowboys' roster remains very much unfinished. In this summer series, DallasCowboys.com takes a look at a number of veterans who could wind up in Dallas before the season begins. Today's featured player is San Diego safety Eric Weddle.)

Name: Eric Weddle
Position: Safety
College: Utah
Height/Weight: 5-11/200
Age: 26
NFL Experience: 4 seasons

Availability: To be determined. Under the old Collective Bargaining Agreement, Weddle would be an unrestricted free agent because he has played at least four seasons. Under last year's uncapped rules, he would be restricted because he hasn't played six seasons. The Chargers placed a first-round level tender on Weddle in case he's a restricted free agent this year. He'll be one of the top available safeties if he hits the open market.

What He Brings: Weddle is known around the league as a sound, high-motor safety with some versatility. He has played both safety spots and started at free safety for the past three seasons, averaging 101.7 tackles. He tallied a career-high 10 pass breakups in 2010, but only has six interceptions in four career seasons.

Connections: Weddle doesn't have ties to the Cowboys' defensive coaching staff. For what it's worth (not much), he did play with defensive end Igor Olshansky in San Diego from 2007-08.

Where Would He Fit: Signing Weddle would give the Cowboys a quality veteran free safety as well as insurance for free-agent strong safety Gerald Sensabaugh. Presumably, he'd be able to play either spot as well as move into the slot as needed.
