Free Agent Watch

(Editor's Note: With NFL free agency still to come, the Cowboys' roster remains very much unfinished. In this summer series, DallasCowboys.com takes a look at a number of the veterans who could wind up in Dallas before the season begins. Today's featured player is Seattle defensive tackle Brandon Mebane.)
Name: Brandon Mebane
Position: Defensive tackle
College: California
Height/Weight: 6-1/311
Age: 26
NFL Experience: 4 seasons
Availability: Under the old Collective Bargaining Agreement, Mebane would be an unrestricted free agent because he has played at least four seasons. Under last year's uncapped rules, he would be restricted because he hasn't played in six. The Seahawks offered the original-round level tender (third round) to Mebane in case he's a restricted free agent this year. He'll be one of the top available defensive linemen if he hits the open market.
What He Brings: Mebane was primarily a penetrating run-stuffer in the Seahawks' 4-3 defense, tallying 148 tackles, 10 sacks and two forced fumbles in 53 starts. He had a career-high 5.5 sacks playing alongside Rocky Bernard in 2008, but his pass-rushing numbers dipped as a three-technique over the past two seasons (2.5 sacks). He missed four games with a calf injury in 2010.
Connections: No ties to the Cowboys.
Where Would He Fit: With three of their top four defensive ends (Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen, Jason Hatcher) scheduled for free agency, Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones indicated the team would pursue defensive line help after passing in the draft. Mebane is one of the few quality young linemen available. At only 6-1, he might be a 'tweener in a 3-4 and a better fit in a 4-3. But Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is known to mix and match his personnel, and Mebane would be a solid run-stopper who would likely fit best at nose tackle but could be able to play multiple spots on the line.
