(Editor's Note: With NFL free agency still to come, the Cowboys' roster remains very much unfinished. In this summer series, DallasCowboys.com takes a look at a number of the veterans who could wind up in Dallas before the season begins. Today's featured player is Raiders guard Robert Gallery.)
Name: Robert Gallery
Position: Guard
College: Iowa
Height/Weight: 6-7/325
Age: 30
NFL Experience: 7 seasons
Availability: Both Gallery and the Raiders organization have said their goodbyes publicly, and Gallery will be an unrestricted free agent no matter the system in place in the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. According to Raiders personnel, there was a large discrepancy in Gallery's asking price of roughly $8 million a season and Oakland's preferred deal, which averaged some $2.5 million per year.
What He Brings: Pretty athletic for a guard and equipped with long arms, Gallery has been a much better player since moving inside in 2007, though he still has not made a Pro Bowl. Injury issues have caused him to miss 14 games in the last two years, and his health is unlikely to improve as he continues into his 30s. He suffered a broken leg in 2009, missing 10 games, and battled a hamstring problem early last season.
Connections: For the first three years of Gallery's career, when he was mostly considered a bust, the Raiders running back position was coached by Skip Peete, who currently holds the same role with the Cowboys.
Where Would He Fit: With Gallery the Cowboys could get slightly younger at the guard position. He'll be 31 when the season starts, whereas Leonard Davis will be 33 and free agent Kyle Kosier will turn 33 in November. Gallery's career has been similar to Davis' in that he didn't live up to the high expectations of being drafted so early as a tackle, but has enjoyed more success at guard. At his age, though, Gallery would only make sense to the Cowboys as a short-term fallback plan if they can't reach a deal with Kosier or want to release Davis. His price tag would have to drop significantly as well.
