(Editor's Note: With NFL free agency still to come, the Cowboys' roster remains very much unfinished. In this summer series, DallasCowboys.com takes a look at a number of the veterans who could wind up in Dallas before the season begins. Today's featured player is Eagles safety Quintin Mikell.)

Name: Quintin Mikell
Position:Safety
College: Boise State
Height/Weight: 5-10/206
Age: 30
NFL Experience: 8 seasons

Availability: Mikell will be an unrestricted free agent once the open signing period begins. A lot of times, the team with the best chance to sign free agents is the previous employer. But it doesn't appear the Eagles will be a strong player to re-sign the 30-year-old safety, especially after drafting Jaiquawn Jarrett in the second round back in April. While most of the free-agent safeties in this deep class are around 26 years of age and five-year vets, Mikell is one of the most experienced players of the bunch, but that's not entirely a bad thing. It does appear one of Mikell's most interested teams will be St. Louis, head coached by Steve Spagnuolo, the former defensive coordinator in Philly.

What He Brings: Mikell brings a healthy combination of experience and playmaking ability to any team. While he does have eight years in the league, he spent the first half of his career as a primary backup and special teams player, learning behind perennial Pro Bowler Brian Dawkins. Mikell has started for the Eagles the past four seasons and has averaged about 1.5 sacks, 2 interceptions and 1.5 forced fumbles each year since becoming a starter. Not only that, but he does have the ability and willingness to play special teams.

Connections: Playing in the NFC East is a connection enough for the Cowboys. They should know what type of player they're getting from any veteran on the Eagles, Giants or Redskins. And that's especially the case with Philadelphia, which played the Cowboys three times in 2009 and has finished the season against Dallas the last three regular seasons.

Where Would He Fit: The good thing about the Cowboys trying to re-sign Gerald Sensabaugh, is that it doesn't prevent them from signing any other free-agent safety, such as another strong safety like Mikell. Sensabaugh's versatility is rather valuable because he could play free safety if the Cowboys needed that. So once free agency starts, the Cowboys could reasonably go after any available safety, regardless of his position. If the Cowboys signed Mikell, he could be plugged in at strong safety and the Cowboys would then either look to re-sign Sensabaugh or another natural free safety to play alongside him.
