Jason Garrett puts his foot down

IRVING, Texas -- Discipline will be dished out on interim coach Jason Garrett’s terms at Valley Ranch.

The important thing, of course, is that discipline will actually be dished out at Valley Ranch. The rest is just details. And Garrett intends to keep those details in-house.

“We lay out expectations for our players for all different kinds of behaviors,” Garrett said Monday when asked what discipline Marion Barber would face for not complying with the new dress code. “There will be consequences if they don’t follow those procedures, and we’ll keep those consequences in-house.”

Barber was fined an undisclosed amount, according to sources. Garrett doesn’t intend to make that kind of information public.

“We’re just going to handle those things in-house,” Garrett said when asked about public accountability. “We handle them in-house. Players understand what the expectations are and what the parameters are and we’ll handle them. We’ll handle them with the consequences that we think are right. We’re going to keep that in-house.”

Barber’s open defiance for the dress code is particularly disturbing considering his status as a team captain. Garrett acknowledged that captains embracing the things he emphasizes and serving as examples is “an important part of the process,” but the coach clearly had no interest in continuing the conversation.

“We’re going to spend a lot of time on this, aren’t we?” Garrett snapped after a follow-up question. “This is how we’re going to handle these situations: We’re going to handle them in-house going forward. Does everybody kind of understand that?

“What we’re going to do for our players is we’re going to lay out the expectations, and if they don’t meet those expectations, we’re going to handle them in-house. We’re not going to talk about them publicly. OK, does everybody got that going forward?”

We got it loud and clear. More importantly, so do the guys in the Cowboys’ locker room.

I'm fine for handling it in house. But the penalty should have included being inactive on Sunday and being released on Monday. Two moves you can't hide to the public.

A simple fine isn't good enough, IMO. These are multi millionaires.

You want to cut Marion Barber because he didn't wear a tie?

What if he doesn't know how to tie a tie?... That could be a huge problem.
