As the New York Jets join the ranks of the eliminated, they are now left to ponder what will become of the current group of players assembled. One player about whom there has been -- and will continue to be -- much speculation is wide receiver Santonio Holmes. After serving a four-game league suspension to start the 2010 season, Holmes emerged as one of the team's most relied upon offensive weapons, and his 45-yard touchdown catch in the AFC Championship game was another example. However, Holmes is slated to hit free agency this offseason.
Though Holmes did have the long TD catch, he was on the sidelines early on, a decision that did not sit well with him, according to Jenny Vrentas of the Newark Star-Ledger. "I just had to go with the game plan," Holmes said, per Vrentas. "That's the way things were called at the time, and that's what I had to do." The WR was then asked if he knew he would be sidelined early, and he responded, "ask Coach [Brian] Schottenheimer what happened; he'll explain everything to you. I don't have the answer to that."
While the emotions of a loss can cloud a player's comments, it's a bad taste to leave in Holmes' mouth as the offseason of negotiation approaches. Even so, with the success Holmes enjoyed generally this season, he would appear to be open to a return.
From the Jets' perspective, a tough decision must be made, as it does not appear as they'll be extending the contracts of both Holmes and Braylon Edwards. This will be an intriguing situation up through the end of the league year in early March.
