The New Orleans Saints were one of the first four playoff teams to get a jump-start on the offseason, as they were eliminated during Wild Card weekend. In the week after their stunning loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune wrote that the team's thoughts on pending free agent Pierre Thomas are unclear right now. Under the rules of the old CBA, Thomas will become an unrestricted free agent, whenever free agency begins.
A source has told Triplett that the Saints' last offer to Thomas was four years, $11 million. Thomas' camp wanted a bit more, shooting for the $34.5 million over six years that Michael Turner got from the Atlanta Falcons, or at least the $17 million over four that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers doled out to Derrick Ward.
If they don't offer anything up to his expectations, he will have some options (though bear in mind, what follows is hypothetical). The Miami Dolphins will be included as a logical possibility for any free agent RB this offseason, as they're possibly losing both Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown. But another AFC East franchise, the New England Patriots, is a possibility as well, in the opinion of Ian R. Rapoport of the Boston Herald. Another logical fit would be with the Washington Redskins, whose 2011 RB stable is very muddled at this point, and whose owner doesn't mind dropping some coin on a "name" player.
