I won't personally be at Dallas Cowboys training camp until Thursday, so until then I am relying on the reports of those who are there -- specifically my friend Calvin Watkins and the army of reporters ESPNDallas.com is sending to training camp on a regular basis. One thing that has come through so far is that outside linebacker Anthony Spencer, whose rebound to 2009 form is thought to be a key to the Cowboys' season, has not been impressive so far in camp. Some have even begun to wonder whether third-year man Victor Butler is poised to take Spencer's starting job away from him and be the bookend pass rusher the Cowboys need opposite superstar DeMarcus Ware. This issue came up Tuesday in Cowboys coach Jason Garrett's daily news conference.

"Spence has been a strong contributor opposite DeMarcus Ware," Garrett said. "I think that if you ask teams around the league, they have an issue every week with our outside linebackers. When you have two guys who can make it difficult for either offensive tackles or tight ends or backs to block them, it really becomes a problem. At different times, Spence has been more productive than at other times."

Spencer burst onto the scene in late 2009, when he had four sacks in the Cowboys' final three regular-season games as the Cowboys surged to a division title. He then picked up another sack in each of their playoff games. But he had just two sacks in the final nine games of 2010, both coming in the finale against Eagles backups. The disappointing foll0w-up has left questions as to whether Spencer can truly be considered an "elite" pass rusher.

"It's not really for me to decide about elite pass rushers," Garrett said Tuesday. "We need to live in the world of Spence needs to get better today in practice. He's certainly a guy that teams know can be a very good pass rusher, has been that in the past, has been a guy, when he's not making sacks, is pushing the pocket and pressuring quarterbacks. He, like our whole football team, needs to do that on a more consistent basis."

And if he does, a defense that gave up the second-most points in the league in 2010 could look a lot more like the defense that was pitching shutouts against playoff teams at the end of the 2009 season. If he doesn't, sure, there's a chance someone like Butler, who has a total of five sacks over the past two seasons in a backup role, could take his place.

"Victor Butler's had a very good start to training game; had a very good game the other night," Garrett said. "He's a guy who's showing up on a more consistent basis. Again, we're looking for guys to do that, and we're looking to somehow find opportunities for them."

If Butler keeps doing it and Spencer keeps not doing it, don't be surprised to see a change. This isn't a Cowboys team that's re-tooling and looking toward the future. If Butler as a pass-rusher can help them win now better than Spencer can, I imagine he's going to play.

Falling behind?

Has he ever caught up since we drafted him. Consistency is not one of his better attributes.

Butler still needs to get stronger if he has a hope of starting.
What....?? Butler makes plays period. The cowboys could use a player like him in the secondary, sick of all this "not ready" crap. Put the BEST player out there..

I agree. Not sure what he means about this "Butler needs to get stronger". As of now, I do not see much weakness in his game. He's improved on his run-playing and in coverage.

He's strong in spurts, but I don't think he can hold up for 3 downs.

I'm all for Butler starting in place of Spencer. He hasn't done much since he's been drafted.

He's definitely not playing like a first round draft choice. If he doesn't break out this year he can be labeled a bust.

Does that make Spears a bust?

Because there level of play has been similar with Spencer at least playing at a very high level at some point.

Are you seriously comparing a 3-4 DE with that of a 3-4 OLB?

I'm so disappointed in Spencer.

The guy I wanted in that draft is Robert Meachum.

Now, I guess it's good we diddnt' get Meachum - who's been pretty good for the Saints - because if he did, we likely wouldn't have drafted Bryant. Of course, we wouldn't have traded for Roy either, thus completely changing our 2009 draft.

But back to Spencer, he's not garbage. He's good against the run, and he does pressure the QB. But when you're playing as an edge rusher opposite the best pass rusher of our generation, and you're not notching 8-12 sacks consistantly, then you ought to be replaced.

I'm comparing production and the fact that a first round pick in Spears has proven to only be a 2 down player.

The comparison is entirely legit, Spencer was only behind Woodley in sacks from the non primary rush LB in a 3/4.

Meachum has not been good unless you consider what RW did in Dallas to be good he only has 12 more catches and 2 more touchdowns the last 2 years.

He has yet to break 50 catches in a year or 1,000 yards or 10 td's he would be considered a disappointment in my book.

In Meachum's defense, he plays in an offense that places an emphasis on spreading the ball around to all the receivers, backs, and tight ends.

And if you're comparing Meachum to what RW11 was here, then it's obvious to me that you never saw Meachum play.

He has been a disappointment as 1st round receiver he has been outplayed by Lance Moore.

He is finally coming into his own but his play has been just OK.

I'm not going to argue that.

But I would suggest that Spencer has been more of a disappointment.

You have DeMarcus Ware opposite of you... and you're notching 2 sack seasons?

It's kind of like up here in Mn with Ray Edwards. He had Jared Allen opposite of him, and then the Williams' Wall, and only netted 8 sacks.

8 sacks is respectable. I don't think Ray Edwards is all that. After the Falcons signed him, there was a lot of talk on radio that it was an incredible signing and how he was going to do so much for that defense. I don't see it.
