Emmitt Critical Of Cowboys
Former Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith questions the mental toughness of this year's team.

Emmitt Smith still bleeds Cowboys silver and blue, but the NFL's all-time leading rusher is not sure his former team is mentally tough enough to go to MetLife Stadium on Sunday to beat the New York Giants in a game to decide the NFC East champion.

"Talent-wise, I think they have it," Smith said in an ESPN interview. "Leadership-wise, they have some good leaders on the ballclub. Do they have enough? Probably not. Can they go up to New York and be mentally tough in this situation? I think Jason (Garrett) has done a very good job of preparing the guys to be physically and hopefully mentally tough, but I think mental toughness is the thing needed in games like this.

"Mental toughness for four quarters or five quarters, if you have to go that far. But that's something our Cowboys have not been able to do in close games. And that's where mental toughness comes into play.

"Unfortunately for us we've lost four games this year in the fourth quarter -- four points or less. And so that in itself is something we definitely need to get corrected in the short period of time to make that happen up in New York."

The Cowboys blew fourth-quarter leads in losses to the Jets (27-24), Lions (34-30), Patriots (20-16) and Giants (37-34).

The Cowboys held a 12-point lead with 5:41 to play in the first meeting with New York but surrendered 15 points and lost when a game-tying field goal attempt was blocked by Giants' defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. They also lost at Arizona in overtime after a potential game-winning field goal attempt from 49 yards fell short.

The Cowboys, however, are hoping Smith questioning their mental toughness is as accurate as the 7-9 prediction he made in 2009. Those Cowboys finished 11-5 and won a wild-card playoff game against Philadelphia ... with Smith frantically waving a towel to rally the crowd.

Mental toughness is earned through persevering. Over comming adversity stuff. Its not a coaching point in my opinion, mental mistakes kill it.

hard to worry about mental toughness when everyone can see pretty clearly that the team is just not really that good.

This defense has all kinds of problems and its not even worth getting all worked up over to me, I am just hoping we get this one and then the next one....but if we all do is knock the giants out then thats that...

This team is about to change in a few months. If it were 08 or 09 again it would be a valid topic to me, but currently it all comes back to something brad sham said during the week after the cowboys lost their second game in a row in 03 to the eagles the week after the turkey day blowout to the dolphins.

"You cant blame quincy carter and Troy Hambrick for being Quincy carter and troy hambrick"

I think that applies now, bradie james, frank walker, alan ball and even spears and newman for the most part can only offer so much.

Dont really see it as a mental toughness issue, like Theebs said it seems to be more of "we are just not good enough" issue.

We need defensive help badly, and to upgrade one or two spots on the interior OL.

I agree with Emmitt. We've been in position to win almost all of our games in the 4th quarter, and we've just blown alot of them. The fact remains though that through 3 and a half quarters we played some of the best teams in the league right down to the wire. The fact that we continue to find ways to snatch defeat from the hands of victory proves the "mentally soft" aspect of this team, imo. We have the talent to compete with anyone in the league. We were right there in position to beat the Lions, the Pats, the Giants, the Jets, beat San Fran, etc..

Talent isn't the issue.. if we could finish games and not self destruct this would be a completely different season. We ARE a mentally weak team.

Easy Ananlysis. We've pulled a few out of out hat too.

We just need done more defensive playmakers to swing games, stop drives, and help make not every game be within 7
