Get better, get better, get better. All. Season. Long. Get better as the year goes on.

Everyday it's all we heard from Jason Garrett, Tony Romo, this guy, that guy. Just about everyone in the locker room took it up as a personal motto, or default answer to questions from reporters.

And yet the Cowboys went from 7-4, leaders of the NFC East after Thanksgiving, to 8-8 and out of the playoffs because of a 1-4 finish to the season. The team did not get better.

Some guys did, though. Here are the five who improved their play most as the year went along.

QB Tony Romo - Long derided as a guy who falls apart in big games late in the season, he was actually at his worst in September and early October. He had the awful finish at the Jets in the opener and facilitated the collapse against Detroit in Week 4. But as he got healthy, his play improved, and he cut out the turnovers that had been a problem. In those last five games, his rating was a superb 115.9.

WR Laurent Robinson
- The deeper into the season the Cowboys got, the more Robinson was depended upon offensively. An under-the-radar pickup who was actually released then brought back, he quickly picked up the offense and gained more of Romo's trust each week.

RT Tyron Smith - The Cowboys expected growing pains for their first-round pick, and he did experience his share, though mainly at the beginning of the season. Just 20 years old for most of the year, his pass protection continued to improve, and he cut down on the penalties. Smith committed four fouls in the first five games of the year, and just four more in the remaining 11.

DL Sean Lissemore - Used only sparingly as a rotational player during the early going, Jay Ratliff's injury situation put the 2010 seventh-round pick on the field much more down the stretch. He played both end and nose tackle, and managed to be productive with the reps he received, registering two sacks in December and a season-high six tackles against Philadelphia in Week 16.

LB Bruce Carter - Due to a knee injury suffered in November of 2010, Carter was on the PUP list the first six games of the year, but became active against the Eagles in Week 8, playing on special teams. As he continued to gain trust in the knee he started flashing more and more on special teams, even blocking a punt against Philadelphia, and by the must-win game in Week 17, had earned enough trust from coaches to register a lot of defensive snaps.

Is there any QB in the playoffs right now that put up the kind of numbers that Romo did, with as bad an Oline?

I was really impressed with Lissemore. at times during the season he was far and away our most disruptive lineman. Seems to have a knack for getting penetration.

Yup, he's a guy i've been watching all year. Didn't get many oppertunities early, but when he did he always made the best of them.

Outside of those 5 names who else is there to possibly add? A few were injury riddled and most just flat out regressed (some more so than others).

After reading this article Jerrry has decided we are more talented than any team in the NFL and will be sitting out of Free Agency again. Sean Lissemore, Victor Butler, and Barry Church are clearly better than any available player out there. All 3 will get contract extensions. Jerry is smarter than all of us.

By the way, beings serious for a moment, Bruce Carter is going to have an impact on defense for us next year. He plays with the fire and emotion this defense lacks. He also has amazing closing speed and is a crushing tackler. Someone is going to get hurt trying to run away from him.

I think one of the first interviews Jerry did after the season ended he said to the fans that at least we can take comfort in knowing that we will spend money to make this team better.. so i don't expect us to be sitting out FA again this year or next.

If Jerry goes on a spending spree I hope he understands quality over quantity.

Honestly the most improved player was a guy they didnt even list- Mike Jenkins

He played through several injuries and played with a toughness and physical style he hadnt previously shown. His cover skills were excellent and the guy had ZERO penalties against him for 2011. He was one of the more flagged DB's in football in 2010. His technqiue improved a ton.

Same here man. 2-3 quality starters is what im hoping for. I think we spend around 15-18 million in new salaries this year.

I'm not so sure it was that he played better. There were just better targets to throw to in Alan Ball, Scandrick, and T HURDLE.

Why throw it to the guy that might make you pay, when you can just throw it to the guy that will automatically either not look back (Scandrick) will penalize you and give you the down anyway (Ball) or just let you pick up 14 yards before arm tackling you and being dragged for another 5 (Newman)

Those same guys were here in previous years.

I dont have the numbers, but I'd probably agree teams didnt test Jenkins much. But when they did he always seemed to have excellent coverage and thats a better explanation as to why teams didnt go after him.
