FA Watch: Ravens' Landry May Fit Need
Josh Ellis
DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer
(Editor's Note: With NFL free agency still to come, the Cowboys' roster remains very much unfinished. In this summer series, DallasCowboys.com takes a look at a number of the veterans who could wind up in Dallas before the season begins. Today's featured player is Baltimore safety Dawan Landry.)
Name: Dawan Landry
Position: Strong Safety
College: Georgia Tech
Height/Weight: 6-0, 220
Age: 28
NFL Experience: 5 seasons
Availability: Landry is currently a restricted free agent. He would be eligible for unrestricted if the former uncapped rules governing the NFL through 2010 were to be reinstated. Baltimore has not announced a tender offer for Landry's services, however, and though they have expressed an interest in re-signing him, the team has a history of letting Ed Reed's safety cohorts walk, as they did with Will Demps in 2006 and Jim Leonhard in 2009.
What He Brings: More of an in-the-box safety, Landry is an accomplished run-stopper, with 200 tackles over the past two seasons. He had four interceptions in 2009, though none last year. He did have a sack in 2010, the fifth of his career. A fifth-round pick in 2006, Landry has a great deal of experience, first starting 14 games as a rookie, then all throughout his second season. He missed all but two games in 2008 after suffering a spinal concussion, but returned to start each game the past two seasons.
Connections: Landry has no pro experience with any members of the Cowboys coaching staff, though he has played under Rex Ryan, the brother of Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, while the former was a coordinator in Baltimore.
Where Would He Fit: If signed, Landry would most likely replace Gerald Sensabaugh as the Cowboys' starting strong safety. Sensabaugh is a free agent as well, and could warrant a deal similar to Landry's on the open market after a five-interception season for the Cowboys in 2010. Ultimately, the Cowboys' direction at the position could down to a matter of taste for Rob Ryan.
