Name: Tracy Porter

Position: Cornerback

College: Indiana

Height/Weight: 5-11 / 186

Age: 25 (born Aug. 11, 1986)

NFL Experience: 4 seasons

Availability: The Saints ate up quite a bit of their salary cap room by franchising quarterback Drew Brees over the weekend. In doing so, they all but assured themselves of losing some very good talent, whether it's guard Carl Nicks, wide receiver Marques Colston or the cornerback Porter, who has to come in a solid third in their list of re-signing priorities. Porter is young as has had a very good four years with New Orleans, but he isn't an integral part of the offensive juggernaut that has made the team an annual contender, and thus must be allowed to test the market.

What He Brings: Offering good height and speed, Porter has fine measurable to be a long-term starting solution at cornerback, and as far back as his second season he showed a knack for creating big plays. He forced a pair of late turnovers in the 2009 NFC Championship win over Minnesota, stripping receiver Bernard Berrian then intercepting Brett Favre to send the Saints to the Super Bowl. Two weeks later, his interception of Peyton Manning late in the fourth quarter won New Orleans its first title. He's had only one interception in each of the past two regular seasons, however, failing to build on his impressive 2009 effort. Quarterbacks completed more than 68 percent of their passes against him in 2011, with three touchdowns. He's also missed 10 games in the last three years due to injury.

Connections: Porter has no connection to any member of the Cowboys coaching staff. He was a teammate of reserve tackle Jermey Parnell in 2009 and for parts of 2010.

Where Would He Fit: While at the same time praising Orlando Scandrick and expressing how pleased he is to have the cornerback under contract long-term, Jerry Jones expressed recently that Scandrick is probably best-suited to play exclusively in the slot. In that case, the Cowboys need another starter at cornerback, and Porter could fill that role opposite Mike Jenkins. All three players were drafted in 2008, meaning such a trio would give the Cowboys a young, yet experienced, secondary group. Porter is not considered the best player in this year's free agent cornerback crop, but he won't be the most expensive, either, and should represent an improvement over Terence Newman, if nothing else.
